What's that videogame movie....

Anyone remember a move in the late 80's/early 90's where a young boy plays videogames, working his way up to the world championship of a yet-unreleased game (I think it's super mario 3)?

...and then finds out that it really was a test and is called-upon by aliens to fight in a war for them? In that case it's "The Last Starfighter". If not, uh, nevermind.

There was also a video game story in a horror trilogy where the kid gets sucked into the game, but I can't remember it's name.

I think you might be talking about the cult classic "TRON" made in 1982. It's a film about a guy who was a video game programmer and somehow got sucked into the game itself. I saw that one at the movies when it came out - great soundtrack!

Then there's also "The Lawnmower Man" movie made 10 years later in 92. About a guy who makes these virtual reality games and like Tron gets sucked into the game itself :cheesy: I don't really remember this one but I do recall it had a dark more sinister story.

Yes its The Wizard. Fred Savage (Kevin from the Wonder Years) is in it. I like that movie. It's one of those films I will watch when there is absolutely nothing on, I have nothing to do, and I just happen to come across it while channel surfing.

Ah, yes, the Wizard. A week after I saw that movie we drove by that giant dinosaur on the side of the road in CA.

Ahh The Wizard, that's it. Thanks guys.

The wiki on it says it received terrible reviews and was nothing but a 90 minute commercial for Nintendo. Funny, because I only have fond, warm memories of the movie, like all the other fond memories I have of that wondrous decade we call the 80's.

Anyway, probably more than was needed to share...

Thanks!

The Wizard rocked as far as I can remember. But, I am sure I could find plenty wrong with it if I watched it today as an older human being or alien life-form.

I think I need to add it to the buy list.

Thanks for reminding me.

Only more blatant Nintendo commercial-movie ~~ Super Mario Bros.
Bob Hoskins as Mario - can you say, brilliance? :)

Yes, that movie was a 100% full length commercial for Nintendo. I think it even coincided with the release of Super Mario Bros 3.

One thing that bothered me when I was a kid was that even though none of the players in the final round had ever seen Mario Bros 3 let alone play it they all knew about the secret whistles. How?

i love the wizard!!! it's hilarious to see them get excited about Mario Bros 3 as this NEW game, never yet played by anyone in the world..ahhahahah.. wow, am i that old already?
