What's so great about FCP

I should whine about FCP more - I am such a poster boy :)... but right now I am going to bed, I am going sea kayaking in Cornwall tomorrow = COLD.

Night all, catch ya in a few days.

Try opening it on another computer and another copy of Final Cut Pro. That really sucks, though...good luck getting to the root of that.

I think it's ridiculous that when logging clips to do batch captures, you have to log the i/o points in 2 boxes. One under the preview screen and the other under the logging info. Sometimes I might log the i/o's under the information but forget to update the in (underneath the preview monitor) on a clip and I capture 15 minutes of footage (including what I just captured) when I was really trying to capture 3 minutes.
Other than capturing problems though, I haven't used an NLE that EDITS this nicely. Plus the color correction is easily the best I've used.
Unfortunately, I can't use P Pro on my PC. Although the min. requirements are met, it seems like the program itself uses a lot of power making any editing step take forever.
I've used Vegas and it seems nice, but I learned on Premiere and Final Cut so I just can't get used to the interface on Vegas.

I am not familiar with logging in any other program, but in FCP, the way I do it is (while tape is rolling) hit the 'i' key (for in) and then fast forward / wait and hit the 'o' key and then hit the log clip button. Very simple.

For me the biggest enhancement to editing in FCP would be the inclusion of a multi-tool edit cursor like the one in Pro Tools. In protools the default mode has a cursor that includes (4?) of the most common edit functions, and depending on the position you place the cursor on the timeline it selects the appropriate tool. It would be slick if FCP would steal this idea :)

When you drag a clip to the timeline ove an existing clip you will see the choice of overwrite or insert.
If you drag the clip to the canvas you have 7 choices.

That is not exactly what I am talking about. Pro Tools allows you to essentially have access to multiple tools at the same time. For example if you held the cursor in one positon on the timeline it would be the arrow tool, and if you held it in another it would become the ripple tool, or the roll tool, etc. It is a bit hard to describe, but it really enhances the speed at which you can edit audio.

thank you, I will try using keyboard commands

Michael Kahn uses a Moviola when editing for Spielberg. When not editing for Spielberg he uses an Avid Film Composer. Spielberg has said publicly many times he will keep cutting on film until his career is over.

The Best thing about Final Cut I think is the fact there is about 10 different ways to accomplish each task.... you can work all mouse based... keyboard based.. etc... drag n drop...

so many options to use and to form an editing style... thats what i love about the program..

Thisiswells, I shot a project two summers ago on my DVX.. and i have over 32 hours of 24p footage... I never had any troubles logging and capturing that footage.. the occasional timecode break, but that is easily fixed by just using capture now...

I love FCP... but some things could for sure be fixed...

Okay. Cool! Glad you like it, Loki. :)

But, I am telling you, there is no way to generate subclips based on the timecode in a 24PA capture after pulldown removal. The markers that FCP creates are roughly 4/5ths off throughout the entire clip. (which, strangely, is the difference between 23.98 and 29.97 time bases) It appears that FCP does not account for pulldown removal when creating subclips. Apple won't fix it.

The engineer who assembled this part of FCP deserves a special place in hell for turning something that could have been decidedly simple into something incomprehensibly bad.

FCP does support that.

If you move the cursor different parts of the timeline, it changes automatically to different tools. I also use a lot of keyboard shortcuts to manually scroll functions. That is one of the things I really value in FCP.
