Whats preffered?

lol...that wasn't an option! plus you didn't specify which zoom, the h4n or the h4.

My question is really whats better to have a better mic but the worse recorder or a better recorder but a worse mic?

Microphone, without a question, because the H4 will still sound fine. Barely a difference between those in the end result, as opposed to the microphones which are pretty far apart.

Microphone. What you put in is what you get out. Shitty and crappy mic you can more than likely expect a crappy or unhappy output. Invest in a good mic.

OK thanks everyone. I was debating this because I know how a great mic can sometimes be limited by the recording device. I guess the H4 is good enough to benefit from a better mic.

Thanks Again!

While I can't say don't get a decent shotgun mic, I would suggest you read up on the H4 preamps. They're way too noisy for me but they upgraded them significantly in the H4n which is much better.
The only way I'd recommend an H4 was for the built-in stereo mics, and if you wanted to use a seperate preamp/mixer on an external mic and then run line-in to the H4.

That said however, for your present choices the microphones will be a bigger limiting factor. So go for more money there if you need something that'll sound the best for the money right now, but an H4n will last you longer as you upgrade mics down the road.
