A awesome Apple computer.
8gb Ram
2 Quad-core 3.0 processors
4 Ati 256mb graphic cards.

Or a

Scarlet
pmw-ex1

Reason for the question:
My computer has 2gb of ram and a dualcore AMD 2.4. Editing HDV isnt impossible, but, like most, my patience dwindles quickly. That, and i would also like to familiarize myself with FinalCut Pro and so on.

I have a Canon A1, happy with it. But the scarlet and ex1 are just too cool.

I'm pretty sure im going to go with the the editing system, but, i was curious as to what others would do with 8000.

you already have a camera that you're happy with. you need to upgrade your computer first.

Get the computer. And give me your old one.

I built my computer more for gaming.
1gb of GPU, SLI

Hasnt really been a game out that actually used it.

EDIT:
And why would i need 4 ATI video cards?

I mean, im going to get it any way. What can a 1gb of GPU do for editing?

The Mac Pro has 4 PCIe slots. If you fill them up with GPUs, you leave yourself no room for a capture card or HBA/RAID card. In order to handle the data throughput of editing (and rendering!) hdv, and, eventually, r3d files, you'd be better off getting some dedicated RAID hardware (e.g. ATTO + 4-, 8-, 12-, 16-HDD enclosure) and more ram. Not to mention the new versions of FCS, Adobe CS...Besides the 8800GT should be pretty capable for now, and it saves you 3 slots.

Screw it. Just get a Scarlet. :D

What would be beneficial in having a capture card? (i dont know what that is)

Raid would be beneficial because of data backup. right?

And what is ATTO +4. Or, for that matter, dedicated RAID hardware.

Vicious propaganda.

What Eve would have eaten is more likely to have been a pomegranate.

This is true. As a matter of fact the Bible never says Eve ate an apple, it only says "fruit" (read the story again). So you're clear to get the Apple. :)

I dont know what you would do with those 4 ATI cards.

The best bet right now on rendering in Motion and FCP is this card: http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd3800/macpc/

I picked it up for my Octo-Core Mac Pro i just grabbed myself and its the best you can get.

The Nvidia cards are for gaming, the ATI cards are for working. For some reason the Nvidia cards dont do anyhting good for the Core graphics that the Macs use.

Would you say that the ATI card is better then Nvidia 8800?

The scarlet looks pretty sweet... I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of them... but as somebody said before, you have a decent camera, so if I were you I'd get the editing suite.

yes the ati 3870 is for sure better than the nvidia card. Check out barefeats.com for the proof in the pro apps . Owc is selling the ati www.macsales.com I beleive, it's around 220 bucks, worth the purchase. And yes 8gb of RAM is good, really good. I'm running 6gb at the moment, til I can grab another 4. Did all my eps of JHS on this machine at super sonic speeds!! ^_^
