Beside all the wonderful camera and accessories, anybody want to contribute in letting us know what handy stuff did you put or bring along with your camera bag?

Anything that save your butt while on site shooting?... ;D . It would be great if we can share ideas in making us more prepared for shoots and build up our kit.

Re: What's in your bags???

battery chargers, as this cam eats juice.

small flashlight
extension cords with multiple ways to plug in -multiple plugs, sorry bad description..

"bag"-case with wheels. Great if you can lock it somehow--if security is at all an issue-- even better if you can lock it and secure it somehow ( lock it to something) we use flexi-cables bought at REI or bike store.

a few small tools, allen wrench, tripod keys-leatherman ( never used it, but hey, its there..)

save bum?

if you are working with others, its nice for them to have a spare set of car keys/ equipment key-locks, etc. that saved mine once..

money for parking meters. ALWAYS LOTS OF QUARTERS for your tripod plates, etc..

always bring water

Re: What's in your bags???

Pooh pretty much has got it, but I generally would add cough drops and breath mints! ;D

Re: What's in your bags???

agreed on the breath mints..a long day can make you unpopular after awhile.. even better- a toothbrush!

one oddball thing I bring along but never have used..

a pack of extra contact lenses. I wear disposables. who knows, someday I might get something in my eye or rub out the lens.. I'm blind without correction.

a list of equipment rental companies or friends with replacement/emergency equipment is helpful also. add to that a list of emergency transportation options ( cab companies, car rentals ) is helpful too. when you run into trouble, at least you can recover a little more quickly.

Re: What's in your bags???

dont forget rubberbands and tie downs are useful to keep things organized.

Re: What's in your bags???

Camera tape (paper permacel), Migrane pills, Swiss army knife, Pen and paper, chapstick, Voltimeter, Lightmeter. and other tools. I kinda divide the stuff between the camera bag and my grip pouch, both always travel togheter...

Re: What's in your bags???

Gaff tape of course. A power inverter for charging batteries where there is no AC. I have a couple of large pieces of foam core one is matte white on one side and gloss white on the other. ( I added even more reflectivity with a coat of clear high gloss spray paint) The other is a little bigger and is black on one side, chroma green on the other. I have a couple of pieces of fabric for covering windows and shading areas, and two bags of these neat little clips (see www.holdon.info for details). Those, with some bungee cords can be used to hold fabric, paper, gel, etc. just about anywhere. I'll go through the cases and bags and see what's in there.

Re: What's in your bags???

Off the top of my head:

C47's, a gel book, arc welding gloves, a contrast viewing glass, a notepad, a light meter, multiple colors of electrical tape, a leatherman, a serrated switchblade, dykes, wire strippers, a mini maglite with a headstrap, an amp meter, a multimeter, a soldering iron, solder and flux, aligator clip leads, tweezers, markers and pens, lens cleaner and a lens brush, a horse hair brush for dust, an ACM, a hankercheif, gaff tape, a couple of well protected photofloods, dry socks, snackfoods, a hammer, vice grips, and a C wrench.

Re: What's in your bags???

You come out of school hoping to become a second AC, and yet you somehow your first paying gig has you playing the role of Best Boy for a feature length 16mm location film. I moved on to other jobs, but the lighting knowledge has dogged me ever since.

Unfortunatly for me, I don't really have the experience to be an authentic "resident electrician" as it would pertain to DVXUser, but judging from the severely limited electrical knowledge in the miniDV community...I might qualify in this case.

In my experience 90% of the actual WORK done on set deals directly with either lighting or power distribution. I would be keeping tons of orangewood sticks, calipers, measuring tapes, and compressed air in my kit...but I haven't had the pleasure of loading a mag in over 3 years. For the independent technician, film is essentially dead, thus the extra room in my bag was consumed by lighting and electrical effluvia.

One further caviat: as my current paying gig is that of a professional editor, my bag is languishing somewhere in storage right now, right next to a pile of unfinished scripts.

Bail money? For you, or for crew?

Re: What's in your bags???

What's in the bags? This'll take a while to answer...

I've just about finished the camera cart, so I keep everything pre-loaded on a Ferno Salesmaker that slides right in the back of the van. I get a job, I load the cart in the van and I'm off.
289.gif

So what's on the cart?

LIGHTS:
FLUO: 2 4-bank 220-watt
TUNGSTEN: 1 1000-watt, 2 650's, and 1 250, all with doors
2 Chimera softboxes

STANDS
2 40" C+ stands with detachable turtle base and arms & heads
2 20" mini-base c-stands with heads
3 small kit stands
1 boom stand/reflector holder
Scrim set: a 24x36 black flag, a silk, & 1-stop and 2-stop scrims
42" Photoflex 5-in-1 reflector
Black foam core flag
Black foam core cucaloris

GRIP & ELECTRIC:
2 mafers with baby pins
Junior-baby pins, so C+ stand bases can be used as low light stands
2000w dimmer
600w dimmer
DC->AC Inverter
5/8" baby stud adapter, adds baby stud to a C-stand arm
Mic adapter to C-stand
Safety cables for rigging lights
black wrap foil
party gels, CTO, CTB, 216, Opal Frost, etc.

AUDIO:
Shotgun mic, 2 wireless systems, wired lavaliere, handheld mic
Plug-in transmitter to convert shotgun or handheld to wireless
8' fishpole
Sony MDR-7506 headphones
Sennheiser earbud phones

CAMERA:
DVX with anamorphic and .6 wide-angle lenses, 4 batteries, LCD shade, flarebuster, and Zoe zoom controller and AC supply

CABLES:
6-4 firewire cable with 6-4 adapter
2 1.5' XLR cables
2 3' XLR cables
1 15' XLR cable
1 25' XLR cable
Two 12-foot S-video cables with barrel connector
12-foot RCA video cables
RCA->BNC cable adapter
Lots of extension cords and power strips and bungees

CAMERA SUPPORT
Bogen 3068/501 tripod with leveling ball
Glidecam 4000PRO handheld stabilizer with Wrist Brace

MISC:
Gaffer's tape, C-47's, dulling spray, suntan lotion (hey, it's Vegas), gloves, 10 yards Duvetyne, 2 20-lb sandbags, 2 25-lb sandbags, two Boa shot bags, and I'm sure some other stuff.

LAPTOP COMPUTER-BASED:
DVRack: production monitor, waveform, vectorscope, audio monitor and digital disk recorder
Small teleprompter

Whew. That's about it. Basically I got really tired of loading/unloading (this stuff gets heavy), and especially tired of forgetting something, so now everything stays loaded on the cart and goes at once.

Re: What's in your bags???

Barry, my brother got them for me at a trade show in Germany last year. I assume you could get them from the manufacturer or one of their reps. They are totally cool though. I just have the mini's, but I haven't felt the need for the bigger clip yet on anything I've used them for. We are going to try "four walling" our motion pictures this fall/ winter. I considered using these clips to stretch fabric onto a frame for a kind of DIY projection screen, but I can rent a screen cheap anyway so it's not worth the effort, but I'm sure it could be done.

EXT. BARRY'S CAR - DAY

Barry finishes detailing the assorted items decorating his tech-laden cart. With a smile, he shoves the package into his van and slams the door shut.

JAMES
Wow...that's a lot of stuff.

James' eyes drift downward to the shamefully under equipped bag drooping from the handles caught in his white knuckled grip.

Feeling quite inadequate, he jumps into his clown car and putters home, as dusty feeder cable lets loose from the trunk and dances along the asphalt like an epileptic snake.
