what's causing THIS screwed up render problem?!?

Okay, recently upgraded EVERYTHING and here's my first attempt at rendering out an HD project and it aint goin' good!

1. Vegas 8 pro, w/ Raylight set to max quality (blue)
2. Red Giant Magic Bullet Looks Suite

3. HVX 200a, in 720pn, P2 cards

4. AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz, 4GB DDR2, GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 video card

So... shot in HD, applied film looks, everything looked GREAT, the hardware could preview in real-time, the dual-core never goes above 70% during render...

YET LOOK AT HOW THE FOOTAGE KEEPS GETTING SCREWED UP!

I was supposed to be done w/ this today!

This is the original clip, w/ magic bullet applied:

Now, here's the pic AFTER rendered to "HDV 720 24p Intermediate .avi"

And again, before render (but with Looks Suite applied), and after render to avi, with artifacts.

One more thing...

I just disable the magic bullet effect on a clip, rendered it out (to see if it was that causing this)

AND THIS CLIP IS STILL PIXILATED!

So much for "high-def!"

I since rendered out minDV, both standard and 24pA footage, and NONE of it had these artifacts and problems.

THIS APPEARS TO BE AN HD PROBLEM ONLY, AND EVEN THEN, WITH THIS NEWLY BUILT HARDWARE!

I rendered off some stuff from this same project/timeline earlier this week, and no artifacts/problems! Unfortunately, that was done on a laptop, which can't run Magic Bullet, and is slow already!

I need to get this new system/configuration rendering HD footage properly!

It's probably a problem with rendering to the intermediate codec. Which preset did you choose?

What are you trying to do? Why did you choose that particular preset? Some other HD codec may be better-suited for what you want.

prefer to keep output to an avi if possible...

prefer to keep output to an avi if possible...

Well, even tho I've been doing DVX/Vegas/24pA for years now, I'm a NOOB at this new-fangled, high-falutin' HD stuff...and literally just been doing this for a few weeks at most...

...so I just chose that .avi template as it's the only HDV 720p preset/template I saw.

By preset, do you mean drop-down template when I render, or properties of the project/timeline (or both)? I'd LIKE to be able to render out any HD project to AVI first for my archives, just to have it, and then, upon demand, render (thus compress) it out to whatever I or a client wants.

For this particular project, I hand off the avi's to someone else, who does some sort of flv upload to them to get them online.

WORSE CASE SCENARIO: I just did some experimenting, and there are 2 ways NOT to get these artifacts on my HD footage with this new system:
1. render out to HD wmv.
2. render out to 24p Widescreen DV .avi

Either way I'm losing resolution, which will be at least a little compounded when my co-worker converts them to .flv for the web.

BTW, I did some rendering last week w/ slow laptop (no magic bullet), and it didn't get these artifacts, and I chose HVX 720p intermediate avi. Of course, I can't do magic bullet w/ it, and it's REALLY slower.

Raylight to the rescue!

Raylight to the rescue!

Okay, I just experimented by rendering to HDV 720 intermediate... and changing the codecs...

Cinepak did NOT show the artifacts, however, it was a tad grainy..

...however, RAYLIGHT's codec seemed to work PERFECTLY!!!

Looks like I'll be rendering my HD avi's using the Raylight codec from now on.

There's a LOT of good codecs out there to use. Which one was indicated in the preset that you were using.

Personally, if you don't have Cineform (which is what I'd recommend) I'd install and use HuffYUV. The Sony YUV codec should give you exactly what you want with no fuss.

.AVI is merely a container and says nothing about the codec used to put a file in that container. Do NOT use Cinepak... for goodness sakes.

I was using the 'default,' which is Cineform. It was apparently causing all the artifacts.

I'll look into "HuffYUV." Is it lossless?

The Raylight is supposed to be lossless, if I recall, and it looked good in the test I did.

Yes, HuffYUV is lossless. Raylight is DVCProHD. Max resolution of 1280x1080. I guess since that is what you are initially capturing, there's no resolution loss. I work with full raster codecs (1920x1080) that don't give me loss.

Also, Cineform should not be doing that to you. I've worked with it for quite some time as have other Vegas users, and I've never seen anything that looks like that.

But HuffYUV and Sony YUV are both lossless and won't give any problems.

Oh, something else...

Are you working in draft mode? When you go to custom render options, does it say "best" for your render?

Cool, I'll try those codecs.

Yes, I always set to "best" render mode, (usually already set since Properties is set to 'best' view) unless rendering out a draft avi for Acid for scoring.

I render to 1920x1080 AVIs using Raylight, and have not had any problems.

I did some tests comparing Cineform and Raylight, and pixel for pixel, they look the same.

Something must be up with my installation or hardware config, because no one seems to have any problem with Cineform either, but I sure did!
