what's better than zoom h4?

Good deal.
StevenMick over there says:
"Used mostly for dialogue/interview recording both with a mixer (SD 302) and direct-connect phantom powered microphones (Rode NTG-3 and AT4073) as well as wireless lav (Sennheiser G3). The recorder is easy to use, the sound is great and battery life is excellent, powered by 4 AA batteries."

I was curious if anyone else has used this recorder without a mixer, and how that worked for you. If you've followed my posts at all, this is an uncertain issue for me (whether or not to have one, etc).

I don't use a mixer, but then I do not own one. When I need a mixer I also need sound crew. The Marantz has mixing nobs, and small display. Would not want to shoot and monitor simultaneously.

Yeah, I agree with not wanting to shoot and monitor at the same time, but I think I may need to do a little of that for a few scenes. That's why I was curious.
Maybe if it has such a small screen, the 671 would be a better bet?

told the 661 had best sound between that and also the E44, E4, Have not tested it myself.

Awesome, thanks for the swift responses. I may be purchasing a 661 in my near near future :)

Curious; thoughts on the HD-P2 in comparison?
I've read a lot of comparisons of the P2 to the 671, but not to the 661.

If anyone here's in the market for a mint R44 with extras, I just posted one with extras in the Marketplace.
It's a fantastic recorder, but I'm not doing much 4-track recording these days. So it's just not getting the use it deserves.

If you don't like the cramped UI of the Zoom why are you looking at other tiny units? THe 671 is nice out of the box but I would go with the Tascam because of better support. You already have a tiny recorder I wouldn't replace it with another unless you really need to keep it in a shirt pocket. I don't think the UI is going to get radically better until you have enough real-estate to do a decent layout. So I wouldn't consider anything smaller than the SSD recorders. The Edirol units have really bad battery life. They did a presentation at a meeting I was at and they were talking two hours or so. On the PMD-671 I'm getting 4-6 hours. I am using a mixer front end so it's not providing phantom power so that number would probably drop a touch. I use the mixer for a variety of reasons but when I ran some tests on the built in pre's they were fine. I wouldn't be worried about quality. The Tascam's should be better if anything.

if anyone posts a review or opinion of equip they are using I would love to hear any info on battery life & whether a power adapter comes with it
About the Fostex FR-2LE, I use it with a 4000mah Tamiya battery inside the recorder.
I have an external charger for it.
With phantom power for 2 beyer MC930, headphone and screen light, I had more than 10h of battery life.
There is a power adapter provided with the FR-2LE but it can't charge the battery in the recorder .
If you take it, verify you have the latest firmware (V1.30). It adds 12db of gain. See my previous post about this.

The Edirol R-44 is pretty small - a bit larger than the palm of your hand. With the Oade brother's mod it's super sweet, though out of the box it's very nice too. I have been hoping Doug Oade will do a mod for the Tascam DR-680. I think he needs more people expressing interest in a DR-680 mod. 8 tracks for 800.00 is really sweet, and it's pretty small as well. Write him now and ask for a 680 mod! dougoade@yahoo.com
