Whatever happened to John Hughes?

During a seven year period from 1983 to 1990 he wrote/directed:

Mr. Mom
Vacation
16 Candles
Breakfast Club
Weird Science
Pretty in Pink
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Some Kind of Wonderful
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
She's Having a Baby
Uncle Buck
Christmas Vacation
Home Alone

Has anyone ever had a more prolific and successful seven year run?

Since then he has virtually vanished.

Anyone know what's up?

BRING HIM BACK! Except for stuff like Uncle Buck and Home Alone
...the hell you talkin about?!
Those are two strong comedies...
especially Uncle Buck!

Edit:
Classic stuff, that.

You know, as much as I admire the films of Spielberg, Wells, Hitch, and company, the films I keep going back to for inspiration are

16 Candles
Breakfast Club
Weird Science
Pretty in Pink
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Some Kind of Wonderful

John Hughes defined a lifetime for me. I'd love to see something new out of the guy that wasn't Beethovens 162nd adventure.

Sorry man, I couldn't keep them down. Don't worry, I still have mad love for Hughes.

Let me back up a bit. Uncle Buck and Home Alone work, but they aren't to the level of the other stuff.

I don't think it's a conspiracy. If I had to choose between writing and directing, I would choose writing because it doesn't require pants.

John Hughes first cut of The breakfast Club was 2hrs and 30 minutes. The Studio told him to cut it down and he did.
Hughes still has in his possession the original cut of The Breakfast Club. I think it would be a great idea to release it on DVD, I don't know why he's not.

I was 17 when that movie came out and at the time, I thought it was the best movie ever made. I lost count how many times I saw it. :)
