What would you choose?

Imagine this. You only have two choices. A $15 000 *film* camera ( no lens ) or a $ 15 000 lens ( no camera ). Which would you choose and why? Assuming you don't have either of these of course.

I'd pick the lens. Reasons:
- I haven't used a film camera since film school (~1997). I've never been hired to use one.
- They make lens adapters for almost every digital camera. Maybe I could use the lens or rent it out.
- resale of the $15K lens would be easier. In my market, I'd earn no more with a $15K lens than with a pair of $1500 zooms and rentals would be iffy. I have no need for such an expensive lens, but I do have need of $15K.

This seems like a silly question simply because of the nature of lens v.s. cameras. I would spend $15,000 on the lens and I imagine everyone will sway that way unless we have a devil's advocate lurking somewhere.

Wow. Pretty one sided responses. I was actually referring to a "Digital" Film camera , like the Canon C300. I guess the lens could be Canon's 400mm 2.8 prime, or any quality Cinema Lens. To be honest, I would choose the C300, eventhough the Canon Lens it's $400 a day hire where I live, plus $3000 Cash Deposit.

WHy do you ask?

Why ask a hypothetical question?

Since when does $15 000 *film* camera mean "Digital" film camera?

Lenses, lenses, lenses... all day, every day. Buy into a camera and people will just end up haggling you down incessantly on price, opting for other cameras on the basis of hype - and all whilst your camera depreciates at an obscene rate.

Camera's are a dime-a-dozen these days, the market is so flooded, it's cheap to rent. A lens makes much more sense (and allows you to get whatever camera suits the job at hand.

Digital? In that case, I'd pick the C300. I already rent that enough and know it would rent out locally... I'd have slim chance of renting out a $15k lens locally. Better would be the F5/55, but that's over $15k.

Hmm. So I guess you prefer to be called a "Digital Cinema maker" rather than a "Filmmaker" then?
Oh well... why get caught up in words when we can use images...

Neither... Nayther... Nothere...

For me, the only occasion where I would want one of those big bazookas is to shoot surfers, and they just aren't paying enough to warrant that sort of investment.

To be sure, if I made money shooting paprazzi shots of celebs in their undies or skinny dipping, or beating their child/significant other... perhaps... but I don't.

I'd spend the money on a lower end camera, and perhaps the lower end Canons... if I were to buy a Canon camera... otherwise it would be Nikon lenses...
