What version of FCP to buy?

I have a g4mac (2g ram) and want to get Final Cut Pro and have it work. What is the latest version of FCP where I can use the DVX 24p pulldown that I can get before I run into compatibility issues? I have FCE 3.5 right now. Also, any suggestions on prices for the version necessary? Thanks

Well only Final Cut Studio 2 is available new. If you want a used copy you'll be wading into semi shady waters. I believe you would want FCP HD at a minimum. Keep in mind that you'll be spending a lot of time with compatibility issues- i.e. certain older than current versions of QuickTime and the OS may be needed to keep things running. Unless saving $500 is worth a lot of aggravation not to mention having outdated software missing a lot of new and useful features, I'd suggest biting the bullet and buying the new version. You can always get it through a school if you are still attending or teaching somewhere.

Thanks Noah. Would Final Cut 2 function properly in my Mac G4? Can't afford a new Mac right now. Where is best/cheapest place to buy FC2? Not a student.

You should check out the system requirements for FCS 2 on Apple's web site. It really depends on your processor and graphics card you have.

I was going to post the link, but it's about a half mile long. Anywhere you buy it, it's going to be the same price. $1299.

You could buy Final Cut Pro Studio 1 for a stupendous discount - there's someone selling it on dvxuser for super cheap, and if that one sells quickly, then you could always try LA craigslist photo+video section. Lots of goodies for sale.

FCS2 I plan on buying maybe some time this year or I'll just wait for 3, FCS1 is more than good enough for me for the time being, and I think it's suiting lots of other folks as well.

Thanks for the responses. I see a few that are for sale here on DVX. I checked the Apple site for requirements and it looks like my graphics card (a 9000 pro) is a step down from what is needed for FCS2. Saving $500-800 (off of $1299) right now can go for lights and a proper mic. Just as long as FCS1 can handle the 24p pulldown, I can make due.
