What type of Camcorder?

Hi Guys,

What is the best type of Sound gear to use with the DVX 100b. In other words what is the cheapest equipment that I can purchase that still has good quality sound.

Also, I saw that Canon makes Firestore a portable data recorder. Does anyone know if this works with Panasonic? If not is there anything out there that is similar?

Thanks!
Dan

depends on what your definition of cheap is. What happens when you put cheap and quality in the same sentence, you get...

cheap quality

Saving a few bucks have bit many of us in the ass in post.

that said, when looking for a mic setup for you camera you should define your budget. Do you just want to pay $100, $300, $25?? My first suggestion would be a Rode NTG2, with some Canare StarQuad XLR cable. In total should set you back about $300 clams. Or if you dont have that to spend, you can get an Audio Technica ATR55, some 3.5mm extension cable, and an XLR adapter. Should ste you back about $100.

You said that perfectly. Okay, I can spend about $500 right now on sound equipment. Not much more than that right now. Thanks for the advice I will look into those now.

My biggest worry has always been distortion and picking up too much ambient noise.

I was asked by a friend to edit a PSA for him. When I captured it into FCP the audio track wasn't audible or visible for that matter, meaning I could see no waveform in the timeline. He said the guy running the sound, ran a boom mic into the camera. They could see the levels during production but in post I had to bring the audio up 9 db over what the tv station will allow. When I did get the audio levels up it was horrible. Any ideas on how to avoid doing that? I always thought for like a sit down interview that running the boom into the camera was better than a lav. I've heard that a lav mic will pick up everything, so the person can't wear a necklace or move in their chair. I really appreciate all the good information. Would you suggest getting a lav mic too?
