What type of camcorder

mov and avi are containers. They tell nearly nothing about the video contained in them. It is the equivalent of me asking you what type of car you own and you saying "blue or red".

What conversion program are you using? What type of .mov file did you convert? And to what kind of avi?

I'll try to give an example.

If you had an UNCOMPRESSED .mov file, and you created a lagarith or huffyuv avi file it would be a lot smaller (about 1/4th size) but would not lose any quality at all. If you had a ProResHQ .mov file and created a Sony DV .avi file, you'd throw away 2/3 of your data.

Then working with Vegas, Cineform is probably the best option to go to for .avi files. I chose Lagartih instead because it's free, but it is not as convenient as Cineform.

There are lots of things to take into account so there is no simple, "what is best" answer.
