Most of the best shows on TV are putting 99% of films coming out to shame.
I don't actually watch tv. For all the show I now follow I either get them on DVD (buying or netflix) or download a high quality commercial free bit torrent episode a day or two after each episode airs. This makes trying to follow a series much less of a chore (no commercials, high quality, etc). I watch everything on my 9' theater screen. The experience of following a great show in theater style is so much better that it can't even be described.
The first 5 are my top 5 current favorites (in no order) and the rest are listed randomly. I currently watch or will watch (only shows still airing new episodes):
Veronica Mars - Best cast on TV, best lead and best dialogue. Very good mysteries and long story arcs too. I can't wait for season 3 to start up. I've gotten three people incredibly hooked on this series and everyhone falls in love with Veronica.
24 - Pure popcorn entertainment. Fun from beginning to end.
The Shield - Just started on this one recently. I've finished season 2 and it is awesome.
Battelstar Galactica - I just started on this one recently too. It took one mini series and 5 episodes before I was hooked though. I'm not normally a sci-fi tv show fan aside from Firefly, which is barely sci-fi. BG reminds me of The Matrix and Terminator series though since it deals with machines and the end of man.
Lost - Loved the first season (watched since I LOVED Alias, JJ's other series). I'm about to start on season 2.
Supernatural - A good X-Filesish series. The stand alones are more compelling than the arc though which is rare for series I'm into.
Smallville - This is a bit of a guilty pleasure, especially now. It had potential to be much greater (and it's had its moments of greatness, but always gets sucked back into just being decent - pretty good), but the writers are limited in what they are and aren't allowed to do. It makes for frustrating tv at times. Good cast though.
Family Guy - Funniest show on tv. The episode the other day had me rolling when Peter said he was raped after having a prostate exam. lol.
My Name Is Earl - Great unique new comedy series starring Jason Lee.
The Simpsons - Not great anymore, but it passes time.
South Park - Just started watching this recently (I know I'm very late. I had seen some prior to this, but I decided to catch up on them all on dvd) and have finished 1-7 & the new season. Great satire.
Drawn Together - Obviously created by Family Guy fans. Really over the top and brutal. Can be very funny and sometimes very stupid (which is sometimes also very funny. lol)
Highlander - This is my sisters set that I just started on recently. The first season is a bit dated. It can be mildly entertaining. Not sure how good it'll be as it goes along, but I'm gonna stick with it since most series peak around seaosn 3.
Heroes - New show I will be checking out.
Blade - Haven't seen an episode yet, but I will start on it soon. I don't expect a Buffy or Angel, but hopefully it's decent.
Nip/Tuck - Just finished season 2 on DVD and am looking forward to season 3.
American Dad
This is by far the most series I've had to watch in quite a while. I'm really looking forward to Futurama returning so I can add it back to my list.
Show I will probably start on in the near future:
The Sopranos, Deadwood, Dead Like Me & Rescue Me
My all time favorites:
1: Buffy The Vampire Slayer & the spinoff Angel (tie) - Two greatest series ever IMO and as a whole my all time favorites in all of cinema. Before I ever started following TV series from beginning to end (when I was just a movie buff and looked down on tv series) I had avoided watching Buffy. The movie was weak and I figured the series would only be worse. I was kind of forced after a TV Show trade agreement to watch the series, so instead of going in trying to hate I let go of the prejudgemetn I had and gave it a chance. Episode by episode I became more hooked and it started to become epic by season 2. The only way to watch great series to get an idea of their greatness is from beginning to end. There is no other way.
Series I've finished:
Buffy S1-7
Angel S1-5
Firefly S1
Alias S1-5
Veronica Mars S1-2
The X-Files S1-9
Carnivale S1-2
Freaks & Geeks S1
Smallville S1-5
Family Guy S1-now
Futurama S1-5
Xena: Warrior Princess S1-6
Hercules S1-6
Dark Angel S1-2
Drawn Together S1-2
Friends S1-10
Supernatural S1
Action S1
The Lone Gunment S1
Seasons of others I've finished:
24 S1-4
The Simpsons S1-7 plus a couple of the later seasons.
South Park S1-7 + 10
Nip/Tuck S1-2
Sledgehammer S1
King of the Hill S1-4
The Shield S1-2
Lost S1
Roswell S1
Battlestar Galactica S1.0-2.0
The Invisible Man S1
Highlander S1
Watched plenty of reruns from other series when I used to watch TV, but I haven't followed any of them from beginning to end so they don't count.
