What to see in California/LA?

Ok - for film stuff, call ahead and book studio tours of Warner Brothers in Burbank and Paramount in Hollywood. Both are real working lots.

See a film at Mann's Chinese, maybe even at the Egyptian too.

Make sure you go up to the Griffith Observatory (Rebel Without A Cause).
Take a drive along Mullholland Drive from The Hollywood Bowl to Laurel Canyon.

When you leave Paramount Studios, take Windsor Street south below 3rd. A block and half down on the Left is the house used as a location in American Beauty.

The Bevery Center is where Tom Petty's "Free Fallin" video was shot. It's on Beverly Blvd and La Ceinega(sp).

If you want to get intouch with the world of Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love) drive through the San Fernanado Valley on Ventura Blvd.

I'd suggest taking some time to see the Getty Center and take a drive along Mulholland Dr for a great perspective on the city. If the Dodgers are in town, they really play in a great old time park with an amazing view of downtown.

In L.A.
Santa Monica Promenade
L.A. "The Grove"
Melrose
The Getty Center
Venice Beach
ChinaTown just north of Downtown.

In San Fransisco
Fisherman's Wharf
Giradelli Square

Sac... well.. I would ditch Sac.

On the way to S.F. from L.A.
Monterrey Bay (Aquarium & Cannary Row)

Take a 30 min detour from the 5. Approx 45 min south of S.F. hit up the Redwood Forest.

2 hours north of L.A. (Santa Barbara) Go see State St. in Downtown. Good to stop & get dinner or lunch there.

Nor-Cal
Yosemite National Park

And if in L.A... or on way to L.A. (Approx 4.5-5 hours away is Vegas)

I have really considered yosemite, and might go for it, i hear its kinda far thouigh

If you are driving up from LA then it's not far at all. It's almost on your way. Don't miss it! Frickin amazing place. If you can spend a night there do so.

In San Francisco, go check out:

1. Alcatraz Tour and rent the audio tour. Seems cheesy but everyone I know that's done it has liked it. Cool history and you hear actual ex-convicts telling their stories.

2. Golden Gate Bridge. Go for the walk across the thing. You might even spot a jumper.

3. Grab a sandwich or a box of dim sum and hang out in Golden Gate park. But only if the weather is nice. If the fog is in you will freeze to death.

4. China Town and then up into North Beach. Grab an espresso and treat at one of the local cafes on Columbus. Check out Cafe Trieste for a very local cafe. Continue your walk up to Coit tower at the top of Telegraph Hill in North Beach. Views of the city, the bay, the bridges, etc..

5. Hop over to Muir woods in Marin. Short drive from the city.

6. Eat, drink, eat, drink.

Btw - Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli square are ok but a bit touristy now. If you do the Alcatraz tour then you catch the boat from that area. Then you might do a little looking.

So much to do. :cheesy:

In LA - the miniature museum and the neon art museum. Not exactly the height of tourist Meccas, but two of the most fascinating places in the city.

wow, thanks for the good replies guys, seems like its gonna be fun for us.

Im hoping i can do half the stuff you guys are suggesting, but I might not have time. 3-4 days driving (from Texas back and forth) and only around 11-13 days in all of california, hmm.

I really want to check out those studio tours just becuase its the tihng to do, but they think $50/day is far too expensive, so hmm

While your at it, stop in Modesto! Between Sac and Fresno, and just right of SanFran. Home of suspected murderer Gary Condit and convicted murder Scott Peterson!!!! Woohoo good times, yay! *sarcasam*

Don't forget.. Hometown of George Lucas.

As a semi-frequent visitor to LA, I've especially liked the California Science Center (with IMAX), the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Farmer's Market, the Santa Monica beach, and meeting Rush at EVS ( tho the actual retail space is about 10x12 -- don't think B&H!)
