What to record sound onto?

I'm using an AT815B in conjunction with a Canon Elura 90. The mic's a rental. I've been getting intermittent buzzing and background noise for a while now. I exchanged the mic, which had very loose connections, for one that didn't, but the problem persists (if not quite to the point it was before). I occasionally get perfect sound, but more often than not something's wrong with it. I even went so far as to tape up all the connections to keep them from coming loose.

As a result, I think I've got it narrowed down to the cord or camera input jack. I'm exchanging the cord tomorrow, so it that fixes it, then great. But if it doesn't, I'm going to have to get something to record the sound onto other than the camera.

I'm on a very low budget here, and I can't find a laptop to use. I was considering recording onto a digital voice recorder that has an external mic jack, but was worried that that would harm my sound quality.

Help?
