Thanks. In the not so distant future this practice of chaining multiple spinning hard drives together will look like banging rocks together! It has been a great tool but when the sizes of M.2 drives get up in the larger TB range for reasonable prices we will be free from the spinners.

There will come a time when a 12 TB M.2 SSD will be the same price as a 12 TB SATA hard drive but that is not going to happen anytime soon.
There are different technologies that make ssd work, and some you definitely do not want in your NAS, TLC is bad enough, now make it quad level and think again. If you are dealing with the difference between zero and one being 1 volt there is a big margin for slop. Break that into four parts now and throw in a bunch of wear. SSD are getting bigger faster (partly) because of this multi voltage storage scheme, not only because of silicon density.
Also stay away from SMR spinning drives! Not all RED NAS drives are CMR or PMR anymore. Serve The Home just did a big test on the impact an SMR drive can make on a ZFS file system, and it's not good! I doubt other raid schemes will try them much better.
