What to do with all my time!!

Very, nice. I just received Shake and used your tutorial for SmoothCam with great results. I watched your tutorial on morphing and I'm itching to try it. Especially after seeing this!

It would be cool to show off some of your Shake skills on a 2K post. (maybe 1500?:) )

Heh heh... now the Captain is a Shake instructor? With all due respect, I remember seeing one of your videos that looked more like a slide show. Apparently, your skillz have come a long way since the first video I remember you posting. :)

HAHAHA!!! Ya -- my butter if not bread and butter is the occasional event slideshow -- Not sure if that's a step up or down from wedding dudes... but I get SO board I keep trying to come up with ways to add things that 1) I've never done before or 2) people might expect to see on TV that it's really pushed me. Not saying I'm ready to go primetime...

As for the Shake tutorials... Just did one on Speed Control that will blow your mind!! Here's a sample:

FCP's handling of 24P at 50% and Shake's handling of the same.

Two frames each -- first is normal frame, second is interpolated frame... look at the background - stopsign, cars, truck, tree... you'll see a huge difference... pause it and use the arrow keys to move frame by frame.

I've also cleaned up the Morph tutorial and it will be up on the Cow soon too.

I looked at that frame by frame and it seems that in general the Shake frames look cleaner, smoother. However, there are several firtst frames of FCP that look as clean as the Shake frame before it. Conversely, there are some Shake frames that are as blurry as the FCP frame(s) that preceded it. It seems in such a case that it was an interlaced frame(?).

I'm curious as to whether this was 'normal' 24P or 24P "A". I'm thinking it was 'normal' 24P. Also, what shutter speed (if any) did you use?

Everything on the camera was fairly standard. Nothing special on the shutter speed.

Here's everything in motion:

((hmmm... doesn't seem to be working for me... ))

I shot it 24pA and had already removed the cadence... so in FCP it was running 24fps-ish.

Some of the primary subject's motions was a little smoother at times in FCP -- but there's a way to fix that in Shake... For Primary Subject, I thought it was about the same for handling interpolated frames. BUT the backgrounds... still....

Now, don't get me wrong... I'm interested because I just finished a sports project in FCP that was shot primarily with 30p as a means of getting more frames for a smoother slow motion effect. The test you did combined with the recent drop in Shake's price has my interest piqued.

Of course, I gotsta get a system that can handle it first.

Yeah -- I've been using Shake4 on my Dual G4 with only 1 gig of ram for ever! I've got 2 gigs now, but still --

BTW -- I did the 24P because that has always been notoriously bad to try and speed change. I'm sure the 60i would look even smoother. I'll see if I've got time to do a similar test this week.

What are you running, now?

Oh, man... this is tough to admit, but I edit on an 867MHz G4/1GB SDRAM/Mac OS 10.4.6/FCP 4.5. I also have a 1GHz G4/1 GB SDRAM Powerbook and I surf the net on a 400MHz/320 MB RAM system.

In recent years, I've spent more money on production gear (cameras, jibs, remote heads, microphones, mixers, lights, etc.... including numerous external FW HDs... not to mention nearly $8,000 of my own money into a documentary project) than computer gear. It's time to update my system.

I don't know why, I just assumed you had more horsepower, now I understand that comment. I haven't had much of a chance to use Shake yet, but I've got the Apple Pro Training Shake 4 now, so I'm ready to learn. I'm running it on a 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4 with 1.5 GB RAM.
