What to do with a defective camera?

I'm trying to decide how to handle a problem with JVC and my HD100u/ It's just out of warranty by a little more than a month and the LCD dies. After much trouble speaking to anyone, let alone the right people, I was told to send it in and see about getting the warranty extended. I paid $60 to send it in, they call me and basically say, " It's out of warranty, FU, $50 and we'll write you an estimate."

One place I talked to said it would cost a few hundred to repair, but I'm kind of doubtful that I should put the money into something that will die with such low hours and tender care. I had an old GL1 I beat the crap out of for 4 years and it still worked fine when I sold it.

I'm seriously considering telling them to just send it back, and get rid of it. I've thought about trying to sell it or trade it for maybe a DVX, but hate the idea of having to mess with P2 cards, having to get a laptop or something else to dump to.

Either way, what would you do?

If you cant' stand the sight of it that much - my advice would be get it fixed, then sell it.
And if you were that happy with your GL1 - then take a serious look at the A1.

Just a thought.

It's not that I can't stand the sight of it, it's that I'm pissed it's going to cost a few hundred I don't have, to fix something that shouldn't be broken yet... all because the warranty expired at the end of July. When you buy a camera, and invest $5k in it, you expect it to last a few years with care. This has been babied, and it's dying after only a year. I have less than 50 hours on it, this shouldn't be an issue.

shouldn't be broken yet? Actually, if the warranty just expired, then this is the perfect time for it to break. This is exactly what the manufacturer wants. My tv, laptop, cell phone, and camera all broke 1-2 years after purchasing. I can't afford to fix all this crap either, but it's apparent they don't build anything to last these days...

Unless the camera is crap, there is no reason not to expect 2-3 years easy. When you start getting into more hazardous environments, the life expectancy will decrease sharply. This camera has been handled gently, therefore it is a design flaw.
