I am finished editing a wedding video that I shot with my dvx. the reception part is real dark so ive brightened it up so theres a fine line between it being bright enough looking good and too dark to see anything.

on my panasonic dhtv its fine, can see all the dark footage but my friends hdtv its all super dark cant see anything.

my tv settings are all standard and not altered...

so should I make it brighter to just be on the safe side or go with my tv's outcome and assume my friends was set too dark?

You should be able to have a fair enough idea from your computer monitor. Ideally you should check it on a properly calibrated monitor. Since they're rather expensive, why not use the video signal monitors on your editing program to inspect the signal. Take a look at the histogram, vectorscope and RGB parade to see how bright the video really is.

Monitors, both video and audio, need to be calibrated for anything you see or hear to make any sense. So your picture is dark ... does that mean the video is at fault or does it mean the brightness has been turned way down of the TV you're looking at? You need to calibrate your viewing setup or you'll never know.

Depending on what you are using for monitor, it needs to be calibrated to a known standard. Once you do that, then you know what you have and anything that looks different can now be ideintifed as being that monitor's problem. It keeps the finger form being pointed at you.

If you are using a monitor you a "TV" plasma or LCD you bought at Frye's or Best Buy for example, you should look into this: http://spyder.datacolor.com/product-ht-s3tv.php

It will get you very close to a known standard for reference.
