What to charge for 1st FCP editing gig?

i could encode with actionscript in the flashfile a time based switch that if i didnt turn off the video would shut down after a certain date... so if they didnt pay and think they got away with it, they get a nice surprise.

THAT is slick Jarred!
Damn, if only we could do that with DigitBeta tapes and DVDs

Here in DC I get $425/day for Avid for an 8-hour day. Same for FCPro, although most people don't seem willing to pay that for a FCPro editor.

They think it's should be cheaper since the software doesn't cost as much as an Avid.

I tell them you are paying for ME, not the system I'm driving.

I get paid 7 bucks an hour!

Oh, work study. You aren't a very good job but you pay for alcohol and cigarettes. And uhh...school related stuff.

just to add onto Barry's great advice -- to determine how long any given project will take to cut, i will propose 1 day for every minute of the finished piece. so if its a 15 minute piece they want, it will take three (business) weeks to cut. that of course is an ideal and budgets often necessitate that I do the work in half that time.

and as far as daily rates go, sometimes it depends on the client. for example, for motion picture trailers i get between $700 to $1000 a day, but for DVD and EPK I have to lower my rate to around $400 or $500 a day just to stay competetive with other editors vying for the same jobs.

thanks for everyone's great advice -- wish I had ever heard back from the guy about the job, lol.

Get used to it jadanstan
:)
It happens all the time.
I would say I spend more than half of my time getting work than actually doing work.
Putting together bids, talking to potential clients, etc...all for jobs that many times fizzle out.

i said "ha ha" (or lol at least) didn't I

my hopes weren't up or anything. I just responded to an add and the guy emailed back immediately verrifying that I was in the area - so I was like "crap! I'm gonna have to have some clue as to what to say to this dude when I talk to him." so I just wanted to be prepareed -- thanks again

now I need to post a new thread on shooting event work. I did get hired to shoot a UFC type caged wrestling match, lol. But I have no clue what I'm doing soooo here I go off to start a new trhread :cheesy:

that's why i write -- sometimes even edit in a coffee shop

no porn, no cozy couch, no cable

oh wait -- that doesn't preclude DVXuser ... which I'm on right now ... in a coffee shop ... d'oh!
