What to buy...

Hey guys, i had a question regarding which is better to buy. Before i get to the point after this summer, ill have 4-5k saved up to spend on something.

I cant decide whether to go with a camera, or accessories.

I feel like i could always rent a camera for shoots and just have all my parts to assemble then. But redrock (the DOF i'm deciding on) comes out with a new design every once in awhile. However the HVX (camera i might buy) seems like it will be around for awhile, being HD and everything.

My question is what should i do? go with buying the redrock kit, or an HVX and just rent the DOF for certain shoots.

Buying both isnt really an option as of now.

Thanks,

Will

You always need a camera, you don't always need an adapter. Having a camera lets you practice without paying a rental fee. I wouldn't buy it for a single project, but it sounds like you don't know what projects will come up. I don't know what rent is on an HVX, but it's relatively inexpensive so I doubt it would be worth it in the long run.

you should be able to get both within 4-5k if you do it the right way!
Definetly look for great deal here at the Marketplace. if the GH1 comes out at the right time. you might see a lot fo HVX's going on sale

some wud say neither. Buy lights! :) but i do agree with a camera at ur disposal u can practise alot more than if u had to keep renting. But if u buy lights...u can probably pay off the camera in 2 good jobs. but as ryvac says u could do both....an adapter package is like US$1600. (i'm thinkng the blade.) I'm sure u can get an HVX for the rest. But then u have to get p2 cards...so i dont know. I dont think i;m answering u...thinking i;m making ur decision harder :) Definately stick around these parts in the marketplace and u will get a good deal with some cards thrown into the package.

For me, building a good production package starts with the camera. I think the best analogy is sports. Successful teams know which player to build a team around, and it all goes from there. If you buy an HVX, then you'll know which accessories to budget for that camera...then based on your production type you can start purchasing lights and such. Frankly, I would be one to rent my lights not my camera.

I would say, put your money on a good camera. Then you can go out and play whit it when ever you like. that will result in good camera experience, that will give good shots.

... and you will never need to think "hmm, I want to make this not serius short, but is it worth it, fore the price of renting?" If you have a camera, then you just can go out and have fun.
