What the #@@! ????

WHAT HAPPENED?

I had raylight working like a charm with vegas and PC. Downloaded P2 viewer and P2 content manager and opened my mxf files in the later to check out what it does.

Now I can't open my mxf files in vegas anymore. It's like raylight no longer is working. I can open the raylight software just fine. But Vegas no longer recognises the same mxf files.

AS an experiment, I downloaded new fresh mxf file from my camera and had the same result (cannot open).

??????????????????????????????/

What the heck? How do I fix this?

I don't know, I haven't run into that -- I have Vegas, P2 Viewer, P2CMS, and Raylight all installed and they work together...

... when in doubt, reinstall? Try uninstalling Raylight and then re-installing it?

I first uninstalled the P2 plugins and that did not help.

I then uninstalled raylight and then reinstalled it and that fixed it.

I am on XP pro service pack 2 my PC fast but not super fast (I am upgrading Monday). Currently not dual core... i doubt this should matter but thought I'd mention it...

P2 applications were not that impressive. Awkward, and slow. Seems I can organise and view my clips better right in vegas. And zap them faster too.

What is the real purpose/advantage of these 2 applications? I thought they would allow me to give custom names to my mfx files names (aka: You are going to shoot a dragrace so you program the camera to name all the clips: Dragrace and then numbers)... Wishful thinking! Can one do that? Or are we stuck with the complicated numbers the camera assigns on its own - which make no sense to us mortals?

Don't change file names

Don't change file names

Hey Faith, we haven't changed P2 file names on several recommendations from people who work regularly with P2. We use Sony Media Manager to log and put in descritions of the clips. Why? Because in the event of hard drive failure (if you've never had it happen, it certainly will some day) Vegas won't be able to find the original files on your identical backup drives which you wisely put aside in safe, cool storage. There are other reasons to not change the MXF file names, but that starts getting beyond my expertise.

Upon further reading of my manual, seems you can preassign the name of the clip before a shoot. So I am going to start there. You have to use P2 viewer, so I am going to re download it and see if I get the same problem with Raylight the second time around. I will try to not download P2 Content Management to see if that helps.

Why do you say Vegas will not find the backup files? If they have the same names it shoud be no problem. I owuld not want to change the names of the files in Vegas. All backups should have the same names. Names should be set within P2 camera and once assigned, left alone.

Well, that seems to make sense. Didn't know you could preassign names in camera or at the P2 Viewer stage. But then, I didn't operate camera - our 1st AC did. Once we had the files in Vegasm though, it seemed best to leave file names alone.

After spending 3 hours on this Saturday morning, it turns out you cannot preassign mxf file name. You can however pre assign the User clip name, but for my needs it is useless. So back to the starting point. Guess the best way to do this is name a folder with a name that makes sense to you for that shoot, place the CONTENT folder in it, untouched and then use vegas to organize the clips with the media bins. vegas will keep the footage sorted in a way that makes sense to me and since I work alone, no need to worry about user clip names and other petty details which I don't need.

If anyone knows how to do this better let me know, I am ALL EARS and would love to check out other options.

BUT I TAKE IT MXF FILES NAMES CANNOT BE PICKED. The camera does it for you and we just have to "live with it".
