What the hell?

I posted this in off topic, but it is probably better suited here. Anyways, I bought an SGpro rev2 and the thread is way too small for my Canon XHA1. It says on Shoot35's site that the SGpro fits all 72mm cameras (exactly what my Canon is). What's going on?

Confirm if you didn't bought it with a step up ring already attached on the tube.

The previous owner could be using it with a 43mm lens thread.

The previous owner has an HV20 but there is no ring on the end of it. I actually looked through the glass (where my camera lens should fit into) and I can see a rotating disc and what looks like to be there motor. Is this normal....?

I believe the tube has a ring size of 62mm ( maybe 67?) and you need a step down adapter from your Camera ( probably 72mm) to the tube on the SG.
Did you make this clear with the person you bought it from?
At an rate its no big deal and you can get one from many sites on the web cheap.

Someone else here should be able to confirm the size needed for the SG, or email Wayne directly.

Why would it say on Shoot35's website that it will fit all 72mm cameras without saying anything about a step ring? That's pretty stupid...

As per my last question, am I supposed to see the spinning plate and part of the motor when I look into the glass? I feel like I bought a shoddy piece of equipment.

Perhaps you should send an email to info@sgpro.co.uk and ask them? They would surely be the place to get the answers to all of your questions about the SGPro. Wayne is usually very quick to answer emails and has always been very helpful.

Any idea if he answers on weekends? I actually needed this unit working for next weekend and shipping takes forever to get here. It would be nice to know before Monday hits. Surely though, someone here should be able to answer this question? There are many SGpro owners on here.

what's your question at this point? obviously it doesn't fit the 72mm so get a step up ring/step down. if the previous owner has an hv20-30 that means he had a step down ring/step up and probably didn't include it. seeing the motor is normal.

And that spinning plastic plate?

I am just worried because from what I read on Canon's AND Shoot35's site, the threads should very well work. Is there anything in the pictures I provided that should be there? Is there some sort of ring that comes with the SGpro for my camera to thread into? It seems like there isn't, so I don't know what the hell the problem is. It SHOULD work the way it is.

no, it should if you bought it from Wayne, but you didn't so everything that the original owner had probably isn't there. you haven't shown pictures of the spinning plastic plate, that'd be helpful. you buy 2nd hand, you're not going to get what you would brand new. even if someone lists it "like new". the threads from the tube need a step down ring from you A1. it SHOULD work the way it is, if you bought it BRAND NEW.

He has answered my emails on the weekend. I'm sure it depends on his schedule.

It looks like you're just missing the step down ring. You can pick up one of those for just a few dollars. Cheaper on ebay, but if you need it for next week, then you'll probably pay a few more dollars at your local camera shop. Wayne will be able to tell you exactly which ring you need.

I wouldn't worry too much, you've got a really good adapter there. My understanding is that the disk is made of an acrylic i.e., plastic. It's the same material used in the ROTOrazor 2 GG for the SGBlade.

Yeah, too bad I don't have a camera shop here. There is a shop on Ebay that I *might* be able to get a ring for next Friday since I got a Nikon lens that only took a few days.

Also, I have never used an adapter before, do you think I will be able to use it on the day that I need it or is it something that takes a lot of practice with?

It'll probably be hard to get an exact picture, but for now, I drew what you see when looking into the glass...

This should make you feel better. The SGBlade is set up the same way. It's a bit out of focus but you'll see it's the same idea.

Rule #1... you should not buy something that you intend to have to use in a day, or a week, or whatever on a paying or important gig...

You should buy something and allow yourself ample time to make sure it is in proper working order, that you do/don't need any add'l accessories, and that you know how to work it properly having practiced with it enough to feel comfortable with the unit long before you ever have any kind of obligation that you intend to use it on.

Buying something that you have absolutely no experience with and expecting to be able to use it "on that day" that you need it, is not wise.

Obviously for future reference, as that does not help you now.

I would recommend that you don't use the adapter on your shoot (if it is something important), if you don't have to. Save it for a time when you actually can confirm that you have everything you need, and that you know how to properly use the unit. Better to go without than to fubar a whole shoot...

That is why I'm slightly pissed off. I was going to play around with the adapter for the weekend and all week to get comfortable with it before shooting with it.

dude, you can still use the adapter, just don't hard mount it to the camera. it doesn't have to be, it's just how wayne sets up the sgpro. the redrock isn't threaded to any camera and works just find. put your adapter and camera on rails, slide it up and lock it in place.

Will that work?
