i could be wrong, but i think the +R dvd disc is the earlier version that doesnt play on most dvd player. -R is the newer version that plays on almost all dvd players.

Correct. What stand alone players will play varies greatly. If it's a few years old it may cause you some grief. Try different media types as infokill suggests and you will hopefully get better results.

You will have to experiment a little. I have an old cheap DVD player that plays every type of media I throw at it (VCD, DVDR. DVDRW, MINI DVD, SVCD, etc) and a newer expensive unit that barely plays commercial DVDs.

I have had so much grief with dvd+r I no longer use them. Try burning -r and see if that fixes things.

yeah, i only make -r disks

-R is the most compatible.

-r is the more compatible of home-burning systems, yes, but as for compatibility the most compatible is stamped replicated DVD's.

As for -r's, I still end up with problems with them. The most compatible media I've found so far is (I think I'm spelling this right) Taiyo Yuden white inkjet-printable. I'd almost go so far as to feel confident sending someone one of those, thinking that it might actually work, which I can't say about any other DVD-R media I've tried, and I've tried at least half a dozen brands (Pioneer, Verbatim, Meritline, all sorts).

Homeburnt DVD's do *not* work in all players. You get a little more compatibility with -R than with +R, and the type of media you use will make a difference as well, but it'll never be as compatible as a replicated master like Hollywood uses (but of course you have to order 1,000 of those at a time!)

I dissent from this +R flame.

First of all, +R is the newer format. It claims be more compatible than –R, but I’m not sure it is.

However, that being said, the only DVD players that +Rs haven’t worked in, in my experience, are ones which were built in 2000 or earlier. (It’s true that I’ve had a little more problem with +RW, but that’s to be expected.) I have distributed hundreds of +Rs to people and not one has said it wouldn’t play.

Everything I’ve read, and experience bears this out, is that +R and –R are compatible with about the same number of machines, but the ones they aren’t compatible with may differ. So, sure, you’ll find a player that a +R won’t play on but a –R will, but you’ll also find the reverse.

I personally favor +R because the media is cheaper and they generally burn faster in my drive.

But as Barry says, any home-burned DVD will find a player it doesn’t get along with it.

Not that there’s any real format war. Burn what you like. You have the same odds either way.

+R is the newer format. But when I went to get my DVD's mastered, the people at the replication house were quite insistent, they said to send in a -R, not a +R. Maybe it has something to do with their specific machine, I don't know, but they definitely wanted a -R.

I wonder why that would be? The digital information recorded to it the same either way.

I wonder if it has to do with the color of their laser.

Yeah, I sure don't know. Data should be data, and as long as it gets burned on the disc and can be read by a computer, why should it matter? But it seems to, they specified -R only to me. They'd prefer DLT tape, but -R was an acceptable alternative, but +R wasn't. Maybe whatever device they're using just doesn't read +R's, maybe it's not a format-specific thing but just for their particular gear, I don't know.
