What size matte box filters are you using?

Looking to buy a matte box soon. The one I have in mind can take 4" x 4" 3, 4 or 5mm filters. What are you using? Any special considerations I should be aware of? I'm using a 35mm adaptor and will use mostly nd's.

Ian, I believe the most common filters used on matteboxes for video are 4x4... even for graduated NDs (soft edges are my choice), and that when you are using stock lenses or "normal" wide angles lenses, like a 24 or 28mm Nikons... For the 18mm wide Nikons you might need the 4x5 filters.

Sorry CE, I didn't word my question well. I was talking about what thickness I should 3mm, 4mm or 5mm. I'm thinking about getting a very wide lense like an 18mm, (i have a 24mm) so thanks for that tip.

Sorry tmnt... I misread that line... Standard Thickness for glass filters are 4mm.

Regarding the mattebox & filterholders (4x4 or 4x5) are you planning to buy?

I have been using the Chrozsiel for the HVX with 4x4 filterholders with the 35mm Nikkor and it works perfectly. I am sure but probably you might have to take off the 16x9 mask in front of the mattebox to use it with the 24mm even though when used with the 16x9 x.75 Wide Angle Converter which = 24mm lens (35mm Still Photo Lens), works OK...

I'm looking at the hysonfilms matte box. It only has the specs for the old version on the site but I assumse the new version will have the same size filters, they're 4 x 4. Hope this one will work ok with the wide lenses. I think I'll go with the 4mm filters if they're the standand ones. Thanks mate.

i recently purchased a Petroff 2-stage 4x5 with universal rails from Zacuto and it works great. I thought about the Chroziel, but for the money it didn't seem as adaptable or even as suitable for the HVX as the Petroff. I wanted to buy 4x5 filters so as to utilize the mattebox for other future applications. While the Petroff is all plastic it is well built
and worth every dime. The HD Chroziel 4x5 seemed like overkill for the HVX, but the Petroff 4x5 seems perfectly suited for the HVX and other larger lenses. I have it set up on my wideangle and it seems like it is great addition to the camera. I will be getting the Chroziel zoom control in the near future.
