What size for importing pics into the forum?

I tried to integrate a picture into a thread, but the picture was much too large in measures: it was longer than the screen size horizontally...

The picture was only about 45kb so I wonder

WHAT are the specifications for good, tall pictures - not larger than the screen?

Unfortunately I can't just try and error, because the pictures are together with Adobe Photoshop on another PC and I should have the specifications for burning the pics afterwards onto a DVD-RW to import on second PC and upload into the Mamber Upload Center.
 
I usually assume that someone out there is still using a really old 800x600 res screen, and stick to a 600 height in photoshop. Will make a very nice looking picture and should be a good size for anyone wanting to look. Of course you could always make a smaller thumb, 300x200 and have it link to a hi-res version for DLing or clicking onto.
 
Thanks, Dan, I'll try and there's a preview in the Member Upload Center that will help me to preview before I post too...
