What should I use?

Hey guys I am doing a shoot of a "Round Table" Disscussion. So basically there will be 20 people in a room and everyone will be just discussing different topics. I dont have the option of micing everyone so what would you suggest I use and do? Should i use a shotgun on a pole? Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Are they at tables? If so you could use boundry mics, but the other people in the room will be picked up too. Do you have a budget to hire a pro sound person to help you? You would need to be really good to boom a discussion like that (and have some good gear). Can you break the groups up into different rooms?

I dont have the buget for a sound guy at all I accually have a very small budget probally about 500$ for audio I will be doing these at least once a month. I may be able to bump the budget up a little and there is no way we cant break up the group because having that many people is the whole idea of these get togethers they are like mass brainstorming.

yes I am filming it. Basically what it will be used for is for education purposes. The whole shoot will be a wide angle shot. It will be publish for web use

Lectrosonic, Shure, and Dan Dugan make automixers for this type of thing. You rent 20 dynamic cardiod mics to place in front of each speaker, run them through the automixer which will open and close active mics, and run into camera. Not elegant but gets the job done. I have only used the Lectro AM8, which can be daisy chained together, but there are choices worth investigating depending on what you can rent in your area.

Good luck

I've done similar video jobs and used PZM mics on the tables (s). You could also use teleconferencing mics as long as the attendees are going to be close enough to the mic(s). I like the gated mic idea from Wabbit though. Good luck.
