What should i use with Pp 5.5? Gtx580 or 680 or quadro?

Hello

i am very new to nle and got PP 5.5, not sure if its an appropriate question to ask here, but still..... i am building a new station for my self now that will include:

The Intel® Desktop Board DX79TO, I7-3930K, 16 gb ram, and i am kind of stocked with the video card, as until now i was ATI owner HD4890...... but it was stated that PP supports now nvideo cards...

so i would like to ask what should i choose? GTX580 or 680 (seems like price is not much different) or Quadro ?

there are some variations of 580 ... 1500mb and 3000mb - not really sure if its worth having extra mb at all, the cheapest 580 is about 420$ , but the 3000mb is about 550$ , and 680 also can be found in 500-600$ range...... so its a dilemma! quadro is a bit more expansive toy 700-900 but is it better then gtx series?

from my understanding the more cudas u have the better..... also 680 is a fresh pci version....

any thoughts?

regards

Hi,

i would recommend the 680 related to CUDA cores, which will work nice if you do the cuda hack --> Mercury Playback Engine

you can get the most Informations here: http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm

as you can see in this article, the 580 will take just a few seconds longer to render your timeline... so if you want to safe your money i would go with the 580.

better more cuda then memory ;)

regards SH

If I was you I would check the specs and requirements for CS6. ( You are bound to upgrade one day)

I believe that CS6 utilises Cuda cores differently to CS5.5 ( ie uses more of them) ...so you may as well future proof your self some degree.

any ideas where i can find that info for cs6? its seems to me that it will support the same as 5.5 , but also ati cards for mac users...

the only thing is maybe Quadros are better to use now?

I had an NVidia and Adobe specialist show me the difference between using a GTX card and Quadro card side by side at NAB. The Quadro had much better performance than the GTX card when it came to using Premiere Pro. If I were the original poster invest in a card that will give you the best overall performance like a Quadro, Tesla or Maximus card.

If the Quadro card had much better performance, it was because it had much better specs. (In short, not a proper comparison.)

Given the same specs, the two will perform about the same. The difference is that the Quadro with the same specs will cost a hell of a lot more than the GTX.

Given the same price, the GTX will always outperform the Quadro.

Here is a comparison of key specs from these different NVIDIA models:

GTX 680

CUDA cores 1,536
memory interface: 256 bit
memory bandwidth: 192.2 GB/sec

GTX 580

CUDA cores 512
memory interface: 384 bit
memory bandwidth: 192.2 GB/sec

GTX 560 Ti

CUDA cores 384
memory interface: 256 bit
memory bandwidth: 128 GB/sec

Quadro 4000

CUDA cores 256
memory interface: 384 bit
memory bandwidth: 89.6 GB/sex

Quadro 5000

CUDA cores 352
memory interface: 320 bit
memory bandwidth: 120 GB/sex

there is also gtx 590, i believe its dual GPU, i read somewhere its two 580 inside..... but also from what i read it looks like it has some tech issues

according to nvideo its best to use Quadro, but for some reasons they dont compare gtx at all
http://www.nvidia.com/object/premiere-pro-cs6.html

if to look at Cuda cores - again from what i heard the more the better, and GTX defiantly kills Quadros here....

as i understand rendering is still done by CPU, so its maybe better to invest in good CPU...., maybe its better to buy 2 Xeon, but if say true never was there and kind of scared to step in

I update my pc every 3 years and always kind of want to buy the best toy , but its hard to choose the Video Card, the rest of pc like Cpu, memory, mother boards - are easy to choose, but video cards are always pain in 1 place

would be great to know the exact models they compared....

about quadro + tesla together - i dont think its worth the money, according to that image there is some difference in speed but difference in price is HUGEeeee - http://www.nvidia.com/content/adobe/images/premierepro-cs6-price-perf.jpg

Not quite. Rendering (the process of compositing a new frame from all the elements in the timeline, including effects) can be at least partially processed on the GPU, depending.

It's the transcoding (the process of converting to a new codec) that's done only on the CPU.

Both steps are required for export.

Here is the spec sheet for CS6 so you can see what Adobe recommends.

  • AMD Radeon HD 6770M (only on MacBook Pro computers running OS X Lion (10.7.x) with a minimum of 1GB VRAM)
I’m looking for a less expensive alternative as well but for a Mac. I’m thinking about getting the GTX 285. Not many choices for us Mac Pro users.

yes seen it already, but most important i d like to know what is better/faster in terms of using it with premier..... but seems like there is no a direct answer to that. some just say gtx 580, others quadro. but the price is kind of the same for 580/680/quadro

what i found out from other forums is that its possible cards that are not in that list are not supported at all by CS, cards like gtx 590 and 680!

so question is kind of easier now gtx 580 or quadro 4000

there is version of gtx 580 with 3gb vram on board........ and for now its seems to me like a better solution, it also has more Cuda cores then quadros

the Quadro`s plus is that its more PRO end card and more stable, less crash and so on.... also i heard from other forum that quadro 4000 is a modified gtx 460 (400 something not remember exactly),

also CS6 now can work with 2 cards - quadro and tesla together, so if i understand it right CS6 now support SLI, CS5.5 does not support dual gpu. So if i understand it right then later next year maybe when 580 will coast close to nothing i can buy a 2nd one and make a SLI

if some one can confirm that CS5.5 support GTX 590 or 680 plz let us all know

also if some one can confirm that cs 6 supports gtx 590 or 680 plz let us all know

also i d like to know if SC6 supports Dual GPU...... meaning 2 cards in sli!

The 590 is overkill. PP can't use dual GPUs in the way you want it to.

The 680 will not use the new ray-tracing 3D renderer in After Effects CS6, so it's not a very good option either.
