What should I teach in a FCP editing class?

I'm putting together a curriculum to teach a beginner's editing class at a local community access station.

I will have about 5-6, hour-long sessions over the course of probably 2 weeks. It will be a small class, with no more than 5 people.

I might be teaching people who don't even know how to turn on a computer. I also might be teaching people who are simply not proficient in FCP.

What are the main points I should touch on to give the people some solid, basic, editing skills?

Should I have them provide their own footage to work with?

I'm very new to the whole teaching thing... so if you have any pointers, please post them here. Thanks.

I f they have a computer for each student I would provide identical footage for each workstation. That way they can follow you if you have your system hooked up to a projector.

Teach everything from project organization to importing footage. 2/3/4 point edits. L and J cuts. Soft cuts.

Basic mixing. Exporting for the web/youtube.

You might want to have a look at the Ripple Training series, which I believe at this point is available as podcasts/downloads etc. (but not for free). It's also on DVD, which is what I have. Steve Martin (no, not *that* Steve Martin) has done an excellent job at explaining FCP basics and beyond. His course is much longer than what you're aiming for, but you could probably adapt a simplified version of his approach for your class. I don't mean to suggest you should use his materials directly, which might not be legal - just as a means to organize what you might cover.

Best of luck!
