What should I do?

If I was a website designer I wouldn't expect to have all my assests handed to me exactly how I want them.

If you've already done the job and gotten paid for it, why make him re-do it for no particular reason? Did they make you totally re-do the logo from scratch just to be dicks?

it sounds like you should give them the file to me.
You were paid for the project right? And that's the file they paid for.

Yeah, I have to agree that most designers would feel providing the files would be called for under these circumstances if you've been paid. You also should avoid creating ill will in an industry where you may need a favor down the road.

It's not about laziness, it's about efficiency. When I do effects work and I get pre-rendered shots that I know already had mattes generated, I ask if I can get the original files before they were composited. And no one ever rolls their eyes like I'm being lazy because a) there's no sense in me re-doing what has already been done and b) it saves them money and it saves me time from having to re-do it.

You provided a service and got paid for it. If they want another service, you can charge them again. Your time and expertise is your product.

Or, you can look at it this way. If you took a lot of hours to edit a video and delivered the final product, then later they wanted a screen grab, would you give it to them? They did pay you for the grueling hours you spent cutting those 250 photos, no?

For me, this decision would depend on the relationship I had with the client (and the contract of course). There have been a few that I would be tempted to just tell them that the files were gone. But I tend to lean towards making the client happy...

Shouldn't they have these assets already?

Or do you not deliver Photoshop files along with whatever final format it is in?

If they're coming back to you after the job and asking for files that weren't not (and didn't have to be) delivered as part of the job, they should be willing to pay you for your time to gather those files. You may choose not to charge depending on the relationship. To elaborate on Jim's example, we were always charged for getting hi-res screen grabs from edits if we requested them after the project was complete, even from edit houses we used all the time. Additional time = additional dollars unless you're feeling generous.
