What should I ask Scorsese?

If I'm not lazy and actually get in line, I'll be going to a screening where he answers questions afterwards. I have no idea what movie we'll see (I hope it's The Aviator or something new!) but that's not so significant as him being there. Anyone have anything smart they'd ask him? I have no idea what to say.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

ask him what the hell was the deal with Gangs of New York . >:(

I have not see The Aviator, but it doesn't look all that great(of course I am making presumption here),

Scorsese used to be one of the great movie gods for me(well, he still is, sort of),
I love Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, they are in my top 20's.
I hope to see more movies like Taxi Driver, Good Fellas from him.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

I liked Gangs of New York. Especially the beginning before the fight. That was intense.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

I also like a lot of elements about Gangs of New York. I also think that today it's difficult for Scorsese to make the kind of films he'd like to make. Taxi Driver had a great script by Paul Schrader. A lot of writers today shy away from heavy material because the audience is mainly arthouse. I'd ask Scorsese about the challenges in realizing his films today versus those he faced in the sixties and seventies. That's pretty broad. Maybe focus the question on Gangs of New York and Taxi Driver. I don't know, this sounds like a golden opportunity.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

I have mixed feelings on GANGS. I want to like it more than I do but somehow cant. Dont get me wrong; I liked it but cant see it being a BEST PICTURE (as was nominated). DAY LEWIS was superb in it though.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

Ask him what is happened with him, why he is doing such a crap movies lately...
...Since he quit cocaine never been the same.

It´s better to burn down than to fade away.

And ask him "you talkin to me?"

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

I think I'll just shut up and let him talk at this rate.

Anyhow, I'm curious what movie he'll choose to screen.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

I don't think GANGS was best picture quality either. At times the film felt like a documentary masquerading as a narrative feature. Daniel Day Lewis was pretty awesome though.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

Ask him if he thinks film-makers lose their fire as they get older. You could add such directors as himself, Francis Ford Coppolla, John Carpenter and Walter Hill as examples.

It will take a large Hram to ask such a question.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

Yeah, I haven't the guts to ask him that. It would probably be pretty disrespectful too.

He's talking at my college as we just opened a new screening facility. Sadly, I just got here and I think I'm going to fail out since this place is impossible. Also there will probably be a VERY long line to get into the screening so I may not make it.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

These classes are too hard, and if I don't get a B+ in my first two film studies classes--I start my first tomorrow--I can't major in it. This doesn't sound too hard, but only 10% of students are allowed to get A's I believe, and 70 students per year want to major in film studes but only 14 or so are allowed into the major. Sadly, the equiptment here is pretty pathetic so you really don't learn much except how to watch movies even if you do get in.

And I think Tarantino said something interesting about directors losing creative steam after they'd mastered the craft but I forget exactly what it was. Anyhow, a lot of great directors do have come backs, but even Coppola and Lucas seem to have totally lost it. Spielberg is still great, but AI was horrible. Blame it on bad scripts maybe? No matter how good a director, a bad script usually ends up as a bad movie.

they lack limitations. that's why.

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

Hang in there, Policar!!! Success is a state of mind. Don't let down. This is 4 years of the the REST of your life. Drown yourself in your craft. It is the ONLY safe time in your life to do so. After school... it's bills bills bills!

Really -- my favorite part of West Wing was when the ex-drunk white haired guy is having problems with his wife -- she's leaving him because he's spending too much time at the White House. He says something like -- "I'm changing the world with these four years of our life... who else could even come close to that?"

Dude -- we all have these fragments of momentary loss of faith in ourselves. Test your greatness by pressing through.

If, when you're done... and you get a B- or even a C only THEN look back at yourself and say it was too hard, I got my ass kicked... but I kicked all those mf'rs who got Cs and Ds and Fs -- THOSE are the loosers. Policar - You win! You found yourself. Don't hide from it.

Give it hell -- let them remember you!

Good luck,

CaptM

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

If I'm not to late...

Ask him what he thinks of the new digital video medium and/or if he would ever consider directing a film shot on DV.

Maybe that's a good question  :-/

Re: What should I ask Scorsese?

I was thinking of asking something like that, actually. He did some low budget stuff in his day, and DV allows even lower budget "films" to be made. (I put "films" in quotes as it's actually videos, I guess...)

And, CaptainMench, thanks for the encouragement; I'm in real need of it now. The only problem is I need to get very high grades just to get into a major that has hardly any technical work (though you learn EVERYTHING about watching movies.) Anyhow, it's still pretty cool and our classroom is one of the four best screening facilities in the world which is sweet. 35mm, 70mm, 16mm, DLP (I think)...if only I could shoot in any of those formats.
