What pole/pipe and clamp do I need?

I have two matthews c-stands.

I want to put a pole/pipe between them and then in the middle of the pole/pipe I need to put some kind of clamp that will also hold a baby pin so I can attach a light.

I would like this pole/pipe to be about 8 feet long.

The idea is that I need to be able to hang a light directly overhead and in the space I am shooting in there is no way to affix anything to the ceiling or a nearby wall and an arm on the c-stand won't reach out far enough.

Can someone tell me what kind of pole/pipe and clamp I need to get?

Thanks a lot.

For the pole/pipe, you can use whatever works - aluminum piping from a hardware store, or you can get an "Extension pole" that's the right length for what you need. Hardware store option will be cheaper but not telescoping. Extension poles are kindof hard to find in 8' lengths but you can buy 2 five footers and just collapse it to your desired length.

As for the clamp on which to mount your fixture, I think a superclamp/maffer would be your best bet.

I second Dave. I'm pretty sure hardware stores sell poles with holes in them (for mounting) and threaded ends; so even though they may not be telescoping, you could probably fit them together with a large bolt in between. And it's cheaper. Then add a mayfer clamp and you're good to go.

When I'm using speedrail, I always use cardellini clamps. As you can see, it has the baby pin you require.

Best option out there. I've hung a 4k Mole soft light from it no problem (35+ lbs). I imagine the cardellini can take much much more weight and the strength of your rig will depend on the pipe and stand(s) strength. Remember to always safety chain the lamp head (from the yoke/bail) to the speed rail. The cardellini won't fail, but you never know.

Exactly Ryan.... I'll be ordering a few Matthellini's for a slightly different purpose. but this leads me to another question... Can I send you a quick PM? Or anyone else who has real grip experience?

My rig was:

(2) LARGE lighting stands (Combo or Mombo with junior pin receivers)
(2) Lollipops
(2) SpeedRail Clamps w/ Ears
(2) 10' Speedrail
(1) Speed Rail connector
(1) Cardellini clamp

If you want longer, use the speed rail connectors. It works AMAZING. That 4k softie I was talking about was on this rig and had TWO 10' speed rail with the connector between them. Worked great. Of course I needed a 20' span 40' off the ground with a 40lb payload, so this rig is built strong and with plenty of sandbags!

If all your light is small, then simple pipe across two c-stands should be ok... just sand bag it to death.\

If that is directed at me, sure man.

The only thing I would say is the cardellini is great if you're underslinging it, but as soon as you bring it over the top, things get a little slippery. Instead, a pipe clamp is the real tool that you want and should be able to handle a lot more than the cardellini in any position.

Also, saftey cables!!
