What needs to be in a beginner's light kit? ~$500

This question has probably been asked a thousand times, but I need to know what's the best bang for my buck and will grow with me. I shoot lots of different kinds of things from shorts to weddings and my own silly videos (like any good film student). My school has an old no-name brand 3 flood halogen kit that has worked pretty good on the shoots I've needed it for, but I am looking to build a good kit for myself. I' have worked with lowel omnis and pro lights at an internship and really like the brand but am not sure if something cheaper would be worth it or which ones to get?

So far I've looked at getting a single omni and tota with the accessories (stands, gels, barndoors, etc.) and adding another tota in a month or so. Is this a good way to go? I don't want to go the route of worklights and super-homemade stuff, but I don't have the money for an arri kit right now.

Use the search feature for "beginners light kit." There are hundreds of posts on this. The sticky at the top of the forum also has a ton of information and links to kits.

Already read the stickies thoroughly and understand lighting concepts, as well as utilized the search button extensively. I was just wondering if someone wanted to point me in the direction of which of the many hundreds of kits currently on the market is the most versatile. I'm considering new as well as looking for good used deals at the same time, ebay sounds like a good choice.
