What my friends are getting for Christmas

The frustration builds...

I'm tired of no one I talk to knowing about the glorious piece of holiday cinema that is Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas.

Screw Ralphie and his selfish pursuit of a Red Rider BB gun! That film is an endorsement of the self-absorbed a--hole values of the the 80's Me-generation. Screw your family and leave your little brother to be beaten to pulp. Turn over on your friends. Do anything you gotta do to get what you want. Thats the message of that film. And the object of his obsession is a gun! Why don't we just go buy each other junk bonds and stinger missiles while we're at it?

Meanwhile, Jugband Christmas is a tale for the working class. And its for the people who care more for their loved ones than anything else. This film is about unconditional love, survival in the face of adversity, and self-sacrifice. Good deeds create good karma and we see the rewards of this in the end.

So for the greater good I am buying each and every one of my friends a DVD copy. Cuz in these troubled times, we can learn a valuable lesson from the citizens of Frogtown Hollow.

:)

EDIT:

I was trying to change the title of the post to something more neutral like "for this holiday season" instead of Christmas. if one of the mods can do that or tell me how, then thats cool.

Second of all, political correctness be damned, Christmas or Merry Christmas are no more offensive to the general public than wishing a non-Irish-Catholic a Happy Saint Patrick's Day

It's very generous you're sticking up for Ralphie because he'd leave you to the bullies, or stuck to the pole, or laying like a turtle in the snow, or give up your name if he's in trouble, or... or... or... :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

Besides, it's based pretty much verbatim on stories written by Jean Shepherd in the '50s and early '60s. '80s Me-generation? I think not.

Hey its not like selfishness was a new concept in the 80's. Just reached a peak some would say...

I hope you were smiling and maybe winking on the inside when you were typing that, David, because I was when I started the thread. I actually like A Christmas Story. One of my favorite holiday movies. But I've always had a soft spot for Jugband Christmas too. Frustrating that so few people seem to have seen it.

I myself am not religious at all. Even so I have no problem with people wishing me Merry Christmas. Why you ask? because Christmas has very little to do with modern religion. In fact, it is a heathen tradition camouflaged as a christian celebration:

- Historically Chrismas was introduced to the northern europeans by the religious romans in a desparate attempt to stop the heathen winter solstice celebrations. All they did was change the name and force people to go to church on that day. everything else (except the sacrificing of a horse) stayed the same.

- Santa Claus as we know it today is a bizarre mix of Dutch history, American consumerism (the fat jolly guy was invented by the Coca Cola company) and ancient Norse traditions (the Nisse - a small goblin with a red hat that made your animals sick if you didn't give them porrige and milk on winter solstice) and has absolutely nothing to do with any religion.

- the christmas tree is another heathen tradition, this time from the Germanic tribes, that has nothing to do with christianity. The evergreen tree was a representation of the renewal of life (the return of the sun).

- the giving of gifts has nothing to do with christianity but is a leftover from the old norse tradition of the giftbearing goat or Yule Goat which would give you gifts if you were good or ram you in the butt if you were bad.

for me Christmas is a celebration of family, togetherness and a welcoming of the new year. religion is the farthest thing from my mind on christmas eve.

That said I also have live candles on my tree so I guess I'm a bit weird.

I'd actually give the '90s that title, but yes, I was racting tongue-in-cheek.

The 90's was a strange decade. Definitely a lot of excess.

And I still insist that Ralphie wasn't a good person. :)

Jug Band

Jug Band

Jug Band was cool but Ralphie rules.

P.S. I got a leg lamp for my office last Christmas. "You should see it from out here."
