I'm shooting a short for a car dealership and they're going to foot the bill for the audio equipment. I know nothing about mixers or what else i will need. Anyone care to throw out suggestions for a rather good mixer and or anything else needed?
Going double system is definately the way to go. As mentioned the Sound Device 302 or 442 is the best bet. Problem is Sound Device items are on serious backorder....
Unfortunately I would also recommend the Sound Device 744t for a recorder...again on backorder.
Not sure exactly what your deal is with the dealership but if it is a serious professional gig then you really should be hiring a serious professional soundman, who will have all the needed audio equipment.
If you don't know what you are doing, spend the money on hiring a sound person that does know what they are doing. Less headache for you, and you will get good sound. If you do not know what you are doing, you shouldn't be doing it.
i would disagree that double system is always the way to go. totally depends on the situation, especially the number/skill of the personnel. good mics into a good mixer (like the sound devices,) feeding a line level signal to a good dv camera (like the dvx) can sound every bit as good as a dat. it is good to have a pro riding levels, but a properly configured mixer and good mics, in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, can make perfectly good one-person show audio.
In this case, I'd have to agree with Dave. If you're shooting a professional job, now is not the time to be learning about audio. Hire a sound guy who can make you look good. Or at least make you sound good.
