What Mic Should you Use to Record your own Sound FX?

I am a newbie to the audio world. I'm directing a short film, and own an Octava-MK12 mic for interior use. I don't have a mic to use on exterior shots.

If I want to record my own sound fx, would my octava-mk12 do the job, or should I look into getting a different mic for that? Do I need a different mic just for recording outdoor fx?

You might want a little wider pattern when recording FX. Since the Oktava has interchangeable capsules, when not get a cardioid capsule to use for this sort of recording. Cheaper than a second mic. For that matter, get an omni capsule as well - you never know when it might come in handy

The Oktava is a very good FX mic. Steve is assuming you have a hyper capsule on yours, and if you got it to do dialog that's a pretty safe bet. I would second his recommendation for a cardioid capsule. If your recording larger things it will cut better with a bit more space on it. If your doing small tight things and most Foley work you might like the hyper better.

For out side you will need good wind protection.
