What Mic Should I buy?

I am a low-budget indie filmmaker. I need a mic primarily for indoor use; Now I am leaning towards the Rode NT-3 or the Octava mk-12. They both are the same price pretty much, anyone have a preference?

oktava with hyper cap is a great choice, but you also need a good shockmount for your boom. the rycote invision series is a great one to use. also, a baby ball gag on the oktava will really help cut down on wind noise during boom swings.

also the rode nt3 is a very heavy mic and not very conventional for boom usage. i use a similar mic, the M3 for VOs.

however, the NT3 has a battery and the oktava needs phantom power. so depending on what you're using to hook up to your mic that could be a deciding factor. but i'd find a way to make the oktava work.

and the stickies are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to mic choices.

Yeah, I've done lots of research, but I was still kind of torn.

The Octava MK-12 looks like kinda shady from the places that sell it, heard lots of places sell the chinese version. I did hear www.sound-room.com was a legit place though.

I'm using this with my HMC150, so I suppose I can hook it up to that for phantom power.

What does "indoor use" mean? Boom? Hand-held? Floor stand? NT3 is a conventional cardioid. Assuming that you are referring to the Oktava MK-12 with the hyper-cardioid capsule.

If you are talking about boom, then the Oktava hyper is typically the preferred choice while the NT3 may be more suitable for hand-held or floor stand, etc. Although if I had to select one mic for all those applications, it would probably be the Oktava.

It appears that all the current major vendors of Oktava are legitimate and trustworthy. I would be careful about buying a second-hand Oktava from some unknown entity or some stranger on eBay, etc.

This is my first short film and I have no experience using a professional mic. I would think I would use a boom pole; mostly will be used to capture dialogue from my actors in indoor settings.

So looks like my purchase will be this:
Octava MK-12 with hyper capsule
Some kind of shock mount
Some kind of boom pole
XLR cable
Baby ball Gag

Looks like it's around $500
