What Maisie Knew

Thought there was a thread for this film already, but I couldn't find it after a couple searches.

In any case, I STRONGLY recommend this film. Watched it last night, and I find myself still unable to get it out of my head today. The performances are a thrill, but this film's greatest strength is its assured direction: directors McGehee and Siegel skirted innocently around big events (a wedding gets about 6 seconds of screen time which only shows Maisie looking through a door to see her father adjusting the best man's tie) to focus on small moments. It's a drifting, lingering film, and a lot of the "action" takes place in the background.

The way this story is told is a f--king master class for how to incorporate subtext and to trust your audience to intrinsically "get" things, without beating them over the head. Most of all, it's just a great story, based on the novel by Henry James. I know it's one of those stories that will probably resonate strongly with some people and not at all with others (much like Warrior resonated very deeply with me, but my friend thought it was "meh"), but the whole thing made my heart hurt.

Anyone else seen this film?
