What LED to use for DIY panel?

Hi All,

I have been looking at LED panel's for an upcoming outdoor shot I am putting together, however, they are god awful expensive.

With that said, I used to design automotive engine control computers, and engine components in my past life, so I am thinking about building a panel myself.

My question is: What brand of LED can I use to accomplish the goals below?

1. Daylight balanced
2. Color Render Index (CRI) above 90
3. Portable (Reasonable draw)

I've been doing a lot of research on the topic, but can't find the exact info I am looking for. One cheap solution I looked into was this panel, but it only offers a CRI of about 75.

Good LED's with a CRI of 90ish are expensive, you have to pay up for them. Are you shooting on a Red?

Where can I find those LEDs? I don't mind paying for the components, I do mind paying for someone to solder them together, and put them in a housing.

Shooting with an HPX170.

I have seen decent results with lower than 90 CRI, mid 80's on the 170, Red likes 90+ CRI, why I asked.

There is a guy here that owns Cool Lights, in a thread he said where to buy the parts he uses wholesale, the thing is his lights are such a good deal you just might want to buy them assembled. Look for the thread, I think he has some new models coming out anytime that are really cheap.

There's no such thing as a daylight 90 CRI LED. At least until now. I'd be happy for someone to show a link to a manufacturer of such an LED though.

However, you can read about how LED fixtures can approach CRI 90 or even a bit above in the blog on my site (www.coollights.biz) where we talk about many of these issues.
