What kinda tape does everyone run...

I'm looking for recomendations on tape to run w/ the DVX. I'm buyin one today (a dvx that is) and I like to only run one brand through my cameras (call me superstitious or whatever, but my xl1 doesn't like anythin but sonys).

Any input on which is the route to go?

Cal

P.S. - If it matters I'm mostly shooting concerts/documentry style stuff. Low light

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

Panasonic recommends Panasonic MQ's. That's all I use and I've not had any problems so far.

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

I'll second the vote for the panasonic MQ's Only one case of dropout and that was the only time I reused a tape. So, for me, it's the MQ's and I used them only one time.

Good advice. Tape is cheap. Why risk problems?

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

fuji are the only tapes i have found to be consistent the past 6 years...
stay away from JVC !!!

and as far as panasonic recommending the use of panasonic tapes... of course they're going to recommend their own brand of tapes! what a marketing concept!

just wait until the day you all discover that many tape brands are made in the same factory.

oops... did i say that ? :-X

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

That is true, however Panasonic PQ and MQ tapes are a dry lubricant while all others use wet lubricant. Still the fact remains if you mix tape brands, especially dry and wet lubes you are asking for trouble.

Personally I had always used MQ tapes as well, up untill about 3 months ago. I went to order a batch and EVS was completely out. They reccomended that I try the PQ tapes, at about 2bucks less per tape, and I havn't looked back. I am closing in on 200 hrs on my DVX and still have only one or two dropouts that I can think of, and none so far using the PQ's.

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

hmm.. now you got me thinking about switching to the PQ's... no quality difference either?

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

No, it's all digital, so picture quality will never be effected. The only quality difference would be build quality, and tape strenght. From what I have seen, there havn't been any adverse side effects from the switch. The only thing I don't like is that the tapes are a dark grey instead of the nice white MQ tapes, but that's just nitpicking. :D
I even heard once that PQ and MQ tapes came from the same tape stock, just different parts of the stock. However, I can't confirm this as I don't know the source.

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

Fujis are Dry Lube too, for the record.

MQs are what I'd suggest too, no point in risking anything.

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

I use MQ's. I too have heard that the PQ's and MQ's are made from the same stock, the difference being that the MQ's use the better portion of the stock, though I don't know what that portion is.

How many times have we had this discussion? I think we talk about this more than we talk about the clunk.

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

"Since day one, I've only used Panasonic AY-DVM63MQ tapes", he types as he looks at the 50 pcs. box sitting on the shelf. ;)

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

I've always used Fuji's no grief but thanks for tellin us they are dry Mike...I was really hoping as much. Kinda figured they were as they were in with the camera from the dealer....But you just never know these days.

And here I thought if was a clank!

I used to swear b the MQs, but got caught in a jam and went PQs for a bit. I had 0 problems, but just feel better about the MQs.

reminds me of the time years ago when I worked in a brand name soap factory and every now and the we'd do a no name run of product....Same soap exactly. people don't trust it though and will pay way more for the same product in name package
;)

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

Can anyone recommend where to get MQ's at a good price?

Thanks

Re: What kinda tape does everyone run...

Actually mino - I've used Fujis too, shot about twenty of them till I finally got a bunch of MQs for Christmas!

I've had no problems with the Fujis - and Jarred said that he used them himself, and when switching to MQ had no problems as well.

As a DVXuser you get the 50+ price of $5.65 even if you buy just 5 tapes. ;D
