What kind of GEAR INSURANCE do you have?

State Farm told me that I wouldn't be protected under renter's or homeowner's insurance... and when I searched the archives it seems that many people on hear think their cam/gear is insured when State Farm is telling me that it isn't.

So damn... $400/yr for me now! $180 of it is a standard photographer/videographer's policy with liability (which I think is a hosing considering WHAT can happen?) but the part I care about is the $200/yr to insure replacement of the $16K or so that I have in gear. I'd have even been happy with just the $200 at this point.

Searching the archives showed people who think that a $60 renter's rider or something like that covers them... so what's the REAL skinny on insurance?

Better to ask who has collected than who has insured.

(The only insurance I could get here as an add-on would only cover equipment stolen. And then only if the thief put me in the hospital in the process. :) )

Thats a great question! I have a $30,000 renters insurance policy. But my fear is if God forbid I ever need to submit a claim, I am going to get the shaft. I have asked, several times about whats covered. Its supposedly anything and everything under my roof, for most all catastrophes, including fire and theft. But that seems fishy to me. Whats to prevent someone from getting theft insurance, and saying their camera was stolen, post a claim and call it a day??

And even if theft wasn't covered, I wouldn't be at all surprised if I was to ever submit a claim I got a response like, "oooohh, so your camera just happened to be in the livingroom during the fire, not the kitchen? yeah, thats not covered. the camera would have had to be in the kitchen or in the stairwell...sorry"

Nevermind having to pick up the tab for the deductible....

Mcgee... check that page... I got all excited but it specifically EXCLUDES Haiti... hmm... check goes into the mail today for State Farm.

Welp... this is it for me for 10 days... computer goes off in 5 minutes... wish me luck in Haiti... hopefully everything goes well... I'm a little nervous about it, but you know how that goes... if you let fear control you then you'll spend too much life on the couch.

If I lose my gear in Haiti I'll be spending a lot more time in the HVX forum a few weeks later... but honestly, let's just hope that doesn't factor into this.

I expect to have some pretty good footage and great sound for you guys in a couple weeks.

Til then... Matt

I have a tenants policy, which they state covers all of my gear for the entire amount with no deductible. Whether it gets damaged or stolen from my residence, or abroad in a 3rd world country, i'm covered. I'm still not 100% confident with what they tell me, and i ask everytime i go in, "If i drop my camera while filming in Nicaragua, or a wave hits it, or it gets stolen"...."is it covered?" They tell me yes yes yes, so I gotta just go with the flow and take a chance, but i'd definately be pissed if something went wrong and i got shafted. The thing is, is as long as its not being used for commercial use, which it is, I'll be alright. But technically its not, because everything i'm doing is spec work anyways. I got to go and add some more items to my policy next week and i'll definately get a detailed list of what it covers and will get back to yas.

Horse films, your avatar scares me in a good way

I have state farm - I pay $300 a year, they told me I am covered up to 20k for all my stuff, fire theft, if my camera was stolen in Italy it would be covered, etc. are they lying to me then?

i thought you can insure just your camera. i was qouted about $45 a year. i think dustino had a thread on this some time ago. but renters insurance was seperate thing.
