The dream is of course to direct features (ideally "big" indies, ~$20-$30 million budget), but I will also work in anything that pays the bills and presents a chance for creativity. The only things I really have no interest in would be weddings/corporate and multi-cam sitcoms.

Even if I was directing features and getting paid plenty for it, I think I would still want to dabble in other types of projects, because at best you get to direct one feature every two years, and I don't know if I could go that long between projects. Sprinkle in a few shorts, music videos, commercials, etc. in between features and you keep the creative energy going.

The kind of director who has the power to get a romantic love story financed, cast Olga Kurylenko as the female lead and cast himself as the male lead and insist that all the passionate love scenes are an artistic expression.

Those poll results are interesting, although the pool isn't too big. So many weighing towards "Indie Features" (myself included), interesting.

For me, I want to stay independent so I can keep the control I have. I enjoy being a one man crew for the major jobs. I write, run camera, direct, coordinate stunts, edit, visual effects, mix, some score... I love doing all these things and that's ultimately why I make features, because I enjoy making them and have something to say. My goal is to eventually be able to make indie features that look like studio features, but do it my way. A long shot? Yes. Possible? Perhaps. I'll take my chances.

It's all about the freedom to bring to life your vision and dreams. To fully do that you need a larger and larger budget. Studio movies or HBO television shows.
