What its worth?

Hey,

If somone was able to create a good looking and professional looking film, say around 2 hours long..no real star persona but an interesting eye for visual entertainment, and of course a good script, but for a first time producer, how much do you think it would be worth when coming to selling out to a distributor? I understand that it really depends on specific factors but hey, there has to be a rough estimate out there...

Thanks. DG.

I know you just want a cold number, but like you said, there are too many factors.

Would it distribute in theaters nation-wide?
What is the appeal?
How good is the script?

Its worth is measured only in how many tickets/rentals it will generate. If you've got no compelling reason for an audience to pick it up off the shelf, then it will be worth zero to the distributor (regardless of how much you put into it).

If audiences want to see your film, it's worth a lot to a distributor. If no audience is clamoring to see it, it's worthless to a distributor. That's why people put such emphasis on getting a name actor, or a known licensed property (like Harry Potter or Transformers); those elements drive audiences to want to see the picture. If you have no names, no license, and no "festival buzz" you've pretty much got no chance.

yeah thought as much, i think i just wanted you guys to tell me a large number so i can be motivated.. but after reading a section in "reel to deal" i noticed that with a classic '50 50 net deal' the filmmaker is likely to get little return..

Would you guys go for that or for a flat fee deal?

The basic rule for a first time film is try to get as much as much as you can up front becuase you will never see anything in the back end.
