Now there are only 2 real business models. Curse and the Cure. Cure is what you get to make the problem go away. Curse is what you have when you constantly need to take medication to control the problem. The major camera manufacturers are selling curses (as defined above). They are just like any other manufacturers of any other products. Panasonic, Sony, Canon, JVC, etc. There is much money to be made from curses.
A good example is car tires. Do you know that they can make tires that don't get flats for roughly the same price as current tires? If they did that they wouldn't sell as many tires. So they bought the patent and sat on it.

Every once in a while someone comes along with a cure. Sometimes driven by
money, boredom, necessity, materials, etc. The Red cam is a great example. Give the people the Cure they want but at generic drug prices. This is a cure.
Can the camera manufacturers make 2/3-inch CCD, HD, interchangeable lens, uncompressed out, 24p, 5" LCD cam for under 10k? YES, but if they did what would they sell you for 20k? They have to protect existing products and future products.

Here is a good question. If you had a cure for aids would you give it away free? Don't answer to fast. What if you were the head of a large pharmaceutical company and you also had a drug that slowed down the spread of aids throughout the body, would you sell that first. You can't sell a cure for much more than you can sell a medication. So sell the medication until generic drugs takeover then release the cure. Or better yet just release a better medication. Now you’re thinking like a businessman. As over the top as it sounds it is the truth.
Now medications can be cures for some of us. If you wanted 24p and HD your time has come, but if you wanted 4:2:2 and 2/3 inch ccds with that then go to the back of the line.
Everyone is trying to make money in this crazy world just remember the rich folks that make the decisions think like me. Peace!

P.S. I get caught up in it all sometimes.:)

I don't think so. This is one of those "Internet rumor" things.

Your evidence for this is what?

i would sell a cure for aids. The drug companies have to do alot of R&D to make a drug. If they gave it away they would lose money. If they lose money they go out of business, then the next drug isn't going to get made. These are private companies selling stocks and trying to make a profit.

I know where you're going but I would sale the cure too. HIV will not go away because there's a cure. Human's are stupid and will continue to have unprotected sex and the idea there's a cure will make people more willing to do silly things so you will never need worry about a cure. You will always make money.

Same is true for cameras. I don't think it's about a cure or a curse. What can't you use to make great images and sound these days? You can make SD video "look like film" (at least telecined film), with the DVX100, do it in HD with the HVX200, The Canon HDV offering and the JVC HD100. Are these not all cures? I think we're creating diseases. If you can't get what you need from these then there's Viper, XDCam HD, Varicam and Red for those who have the money. I don't understand. If you had a camera that gave you everything you'd simply find reason to not be satisfied. It's human nature.

In 2006 I could buy an FX1 and I would have no problem shooting a film in 1080i HDV or Cineframe 30, just watch me. I do it in a heartbeat, but I'm still using the DVX100 taking great pictures and having fun making movies. I've been cured. I plan to buy one of the new Sonys or the Canon. Those aren't cures, those are upgrades, vitamins if you will that can aid in my already good health.

If you have an HDV camera or an HVX you have your cure. If you don't have a 2/3 chip HD camera, you probably can't afford it there fore you've been cured with the generic drugs versus the name brand but it works right. Are you taking good pictures with good sound and making money and/or features. How many pores do you need to see on the Gabriel Union's face? I'm happy believing she and my other beloved actresses are perfect skinned beauties.

At a point and time when even Sony is listening to the consumer I think we've entered a pretty good period of time for the indie filmmaker. Honestly if I buy a Canon or Sony 24p HDV camera I'm not going to run out and buy and ACV Camera, it's going to be one or the other. You buy into the curse when you overdose on the cure. (Keep in mind I still shoot with a DVX100 - the original).

If I bought one of these I can still make HD pictures and tell my story with either. It seems you have it all wrong. We have many different cures and you have to decide how much you can pay for the cure. And honestly if you could afford film + processing for your feature, would you buy it? I wouldn't. I'd take that money and make a better DV/HDV movie. (Actually for that kind of cash I'd sale my DVX100 and buy the Canon and make a film). Again keep in mind it will be another few years before most people can even see real HD on their sets. The majority of people probably won't bother for awhile, the Xbox and Sony gamers may. And am I wrong here to assume most people can watch HDDVDs on their computers?

they can also make lightbulbs that are perfectly sealed so that will last forever but then GE would make no money. Lightbulbs eventually burn out B/C there is a very very small amount of air inside of the bumb, giving it its limited life.
