What is the difference between these two relays?

The one is FF35 frame size and the other is S35 frame size.

Thats 36mm x 24mm the first and 24mm x 13.5 mm the other.

Dont even thing that because these relays are F1.5 you will not need to stop them down... the same aplies to ALL lenses. If you shoot wide open you will be terribly soft. Try a test ride before you buy them. They do perform from F2.8 and above, with a bit of trade off you can go to F2 1/2...

So you need 6400$ to do both and just for 1/2. if you were a rental house and had a 2/3 cam also you need a 2/3 relay also so another 3000$ so a total of 9400$ to do all plus an adapter for another 2000$ to 5000$... (that does not exchange GG's)

With Sgblade and GG.relay you can do all for about 5000$ (the 1/2 support will be available soon)...

That is just an example.

not familiar with both,

speculation: one might producer sharper or cleaner image than the other since they do different magnification levels, or it might be simply that they didn't sell that well and they wanted something more affordable to compete.

With the Full Frame relay you can use SLR lens exclusively and when you put a SLR FF lens on, it stay the correct focal length. An 50mm is a 50mm. But you cannot use the PL mount with Cine lens, because of the different size of Academy frame is much smaller and your image would be severely vignetted. You would have to loose the relay and use your stock lens and zoom in to loose vignette.

The Academy relay can work with both types of lens, but with a SLR FF Lens there is a magnification factor of 1.5 so you 50mm is now a 75mm. The Cine lens will stay correct.

So if your not going to be renting high dollar Cine lens, all the time. And you would like to own a set of SLR's FF lens and not have the magnification factor, then you would want the Full Frame Relay.

And if your going Cine all the way then you want the Academy Frame.

Great description JD!

I see that Zeiss is coming out with a new set of compact primes that allow the user to change the mount from Canon to PL-Mount. This is cool, but the coolest thing is that they are supposedly full frame 35mm frame size, which would seem to be a first with a PL-Mount.

I shoot Academy most of the time, unless a client tells me they want that 5D FF35 look, which I can do with my Ultimates on palmcorders, but not with my B4 Pro 2/3" Relay Lens.
