What is the Difference Between 501 and 503

If you're going to get a 35mm adapter, matte boxes, etc. then I'd probably avoid the 501. Plenty of people have that head though, so I'm sure the dvx alone should hold up?
 
Stock DVX balances perfectly on a 501 with the plate in the standard position. With my Cavision 4x5.6 matte box and rails the plate needs to be all the way forward but it still balances. Just make sure you lock the tilt when you move the tripod around.
