hi guys,

couple of days ago, I did a feature, they hired two crews to record their audio, so... I met another soundman in the production. both of us use SD 442, however, he brought another mixer, which he told me it produces much better audio quality.... I had a look but because we are rushing to a next location, we didn't talk too much on the mixer....

I am just wondering if anyone familiar with that mixer.. It is the sharp of 442, however, its input and output at the same side of the mixer, (left side , to be precise)
It's kind of old, I think the surface is like metal, and design is to prevent soundman accidently touch the fader, the edge which surround the fader actually higher than the fader, so... you have to make your effort to touch the fader....

It's cost much more than SD 442, he told me it is about 5 to 6k or more...

Anyone knows this legendary mixer, I really keen to find out

With your description I would say its probably an SQN 4S?

And there are 5 of them on trewaudio for about $1000-$1400.

They are a good mixer, but built for a past generation.
Most people with them had enough sense to move to the 442 when it came out.

Wonder if the guy still records to his nagra ;)

Thanks a lot Ripple, that's the one, I am looking for ! just wondering if SQN 4S is producing better audio than other mixers, what is pros and cons..... keen to buy one for back up and testing mixer, I have a 442 which is amazing mixer... just wanna get another one...(since I am getting richer and richer ...just kidding)

Keeping this answer very simple..
Even if there was a difference in audio quality there are so many other factors
that happen on a daily basis regarding the quality of audio recorded
(camera you're recording to, set noise, mics, etc..etc)
that NO one is going to notice the difference.

In my opinion, once you get to a certain level of performance (audio quality)
its more about the features..
IE: limiters, metering, routing..etc.
and these older style mixers just cant hold up.
In the end only you will be able to decide whats right for you.
I can only give you an opinion.
