What is the best EVF out there?

If you want to use it as a monitor, then image quality is number one and image analysis tools (exposure and focus tools) are number two. We feel that the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q offer unparalleled performace in both these areas. The OLED panel is amazing to look at and the waveform, histogram, vectorcope (coming very soon), false color, pixel zoom with finger drag positioning, focus assist and LUTs make these unbeatable performers. If you are shooting HD the Odyssey7 can record up to 1080p60 via SDI and 1080p30 via HDMI. For higher performance go to the Odyssey7Q. There's a comparison chart on our website.

I had the Cineroid retina and sold it..... honestly, I think it's a bad product in so many ways.

First the Cineroid website is (or at least was) a mess. The so-called user forum was useless, if they responded at all they were slow.
Their website which hosts the firmware software was immensely slow.......
The firmware could only be installed through a pc, and the software was buggy, so I had to try several times to get the monitor to connect.
And then there was something about connection issues with shooting 50fps or something like that.

Anyways, I'm never buying Cineroid again.

After that, I invested in TV Logic instead, since that is what the typical rental house here uses, and I haven't been happier. Quality product with plenty of options and in full HD. I would recommend them anytime. A bit pricey though.... but you get what you pay for.

OK, skipping the Cineroid. Thanks for that info. I noticed that their site was kind of unprofessional. I have a the TV Logic 5.6. It's a great little monitor but the color is not right on it. It's good for everything else so I need an EVF specifically. I'm thinking the Alpahtron EVF 035W-3G. That's supposed to be manufactured by TVLogic.

The 7Q is fantastic. It really pops. Will you guys be making and EVF ever, Mitch?

Just got a preorder quote for the "big" Gratical: 3.199€, thats around 4000$ at the moment.
That is including a 250€/310$ preorder discount, and excluding VAT, so Europeans will end up paying 4300$ plus 17-20% VAT for it.

I´m getting one and rent it out, saying "camera and tripod included";)

Seriously, this probably will become a popular choice amongst RED user and alike.

I got the same notice an thought it is way overpriced.

While it is expensive, I look at it like a tripod or light.

You will be able to use it on pretty much ANY camera you buy going forward.

As with many items in our field it depends on what you do: For people buying camera's in the over 15K range, this might just be a great deal, because as Matt wrote, it will be of use even for future camera purchases.
For me as a C100 and Blackmagic user, I'm rather waiting for sth new to come in the 1500-2000$ range.

My dream would be a an OLED and retina update to the DP4, while managing to shrink the outer dimensions ;)

Lights and tripods yes, but with all the 4K cameras being released, I have a strong feeling we will be seeing 4K field monitors popping up in the near future. And you and I both know, as soon as I spend $3800 on one, some Chinese company will offer a 4K field monitor for $800.

Anyone tried the spectra HD 4 or the gratical extensively yet?
What worries me about the gratical is, it does not accept 4k. So I will not be able to check focus in 1to1 mode when recording 4k.
Nor will it accept any image from a camera that sends out 4k only, while recording to an external recorder (like A7s). The HDMI on
the gratical has the same problem the Odyssey 7Q had.
Pretty unsexy considering the monetary investment and the 4-5 years (at least) usage time you would expect from such an intem.

Anything is possible and you're not the first to ask.

I asked you last year. Go Zacuto one better and build one with hd pro res record to sd card. I am now pretty heavily invested in CD because I like the idea of no matter what camera is being used we have a common monitor, so everybody is seeing the same thing. I would love it if that could be extended into OLED evf and go Flanders one better and build a 4k 17' or 24" OLED on set monitor that matched the Odyessys. It would be incredible if all recorder/monitors, evfs and on set monitors shared the same protocols and matched, so there would be a standard visual reference and interface across the board.

There currently aren't any 4K VF's, VF's that accept a native 4K signal or 4K cameras that output a 4K signal to a VF. They're all internally D/C'ing to HD for the HD Rez VF's. And I believe the Graticle has the highest pixel count of any EVF currently(read: soon to be) available, 5.4 million pixels/2687 ppi. If you compare it to the other "best looking VF" I've put my eye up to, Panasonic's native OLED for the s35 4K VariCam, the Panasonic VF is 1080 vs the Graticle at 720, but the Graticle still has twice the pixels and it will accept a 1080/60P signal via SDI or HDMI and loop them out, too.

Has anything changed in the past few months? Can anyone recommend an EVF up to $600? Is the DP4 with the shade a good alternative for field work?

Wanted to bump this thread because I'm in search of an EVF for my new studio (for a Sony FS7).
I had been using the Kinotehnik LCDVFE on my old rig. For the most part it's great - light, relatively cheap, and can be powered with the D-Tap that also powers the camera. The sole issue I have is that it's HDMI-only, and that's terrible for running and gunning.
Has anyone seen something with those features, but which comes with an SDI input? Looking at all the usual suspects. Budget - maybe $1500?
Any suggestions appreciated!

Jesse

Zacuto's Gratical EYE is the best 3rd Party EVF for SDI equipped cameras, & works great with the FS7.

Got one during a sale for $1600.

The Eye is indeed great, but I've had a devil of a time finding one for much less than the brand new price of $2k. People just don't seem to sell those things (which is a great indicator of how good they are).

An alternative would be the Blackmagic Ursa Viewfinder with the Wooden Camera mod kit. I recently got a used BMD viewfinder and the mod kit for about $1400 combined. The mod was pretty straight forward. The VF, when taken off that hideous built in mount for the BM cameras, is about the same size as the Eye (maybe even a little smaller). Decent exposure tools, good clean 1080 image. But no LUT support.

AFAIK the URSA EVF only accepts a progressive signal, & the FS7's SDI only outputs interlaced.

There are inelegant workarounds to transcode the signal, but when added up the costs exceed the price of an EYE, & at the end of the day you'd be left with a kludge.

The URSA EVF is a fine device, but it's best paired with an URSA, whereas the EYE can work with most SDI capable cameras, & includes more tools. For FS7 users LUT support alone may be an important consideration for recording S-Log at off speed framerates.
