What is technical motivation?

Technical motivation simply means is there a reason why you're doing a specific camera movement, shot or lighting formation. So basically does it enhance the story in someway or are you just doing it because it looks "kewl"?

Are there samples online by any chance?

Aside from watching good films and storyboarding key scenes out, I would recommend the Hollywood Camerawork DVD course. The course discusses tech motivation quite a bit. A lot of it comes down to just having these tools, knowing the typical blocking ideas and shots, and then using your natural intiuition - like, what should the camera do here, why are we doing a close up? What is the character feeling and why do we need to be so close to them? Exploring the ideas between distance and relationship. Emotional distance can often = shot distance. But it's just one idea that you can use to base everything else off of.

The more you look into acting as well, the more you will develop in this area. Books like shot by shot and "Directing actors" are two good sources. The more you understand the acting side of it as well, the more the camera begins to make sense as a storytelling device. Not just a thing that's there to shoot a wide, medium and close up.
