What is stereo?

Long journey to get back where this discussion started :)

And yes, dual mono seems to confuse video editors to no end. You label the tape, you put it on your report, but yet so many video editors treat your two tracks like a stereo file. Who exactly is sending them stereo files that they continue to assume this?

Worse yet, the video editor who decides to DELETE on of the tracks before it gets to sound post.

Sorry for the rant but too many hours of my life have been spent fixing audio that the video editor screwed up due to incompetence.

Cheers

Not so. Quite often on a set you may have one boom mic recording dialogue, in which case you would send it to 2 channels with one side being 6db lower than the other to protect against over modulation. (Dual mono recording)

I didn't get that at all from his post, in fact he didn't even mention anything about files. He was asking what stereo is and the difference between stereo and dual mono.
This has nothing what so ever to do with NLE's or files on a hard drive. Stereo and mono have been around long before the days of NLE's and digital sound files.

With an explanation like the following, I wasn't so sure you really understood.

They are NOT both a stereo signal. Dual mono is exactly what the name implies. 2 mono signals, not a stereo signal.
I'm in the studio business so in my world dual mono doesn't mean what it does to you.
That's a great ideal though multing your signal to the camera and having one quieter to protect from distortion. I'm sorry if I didn't quite understand the first post, not everybody is the best at articulating what they want. Give me a break, sheesh.I already explained that I misunderstood the first post. I don't appreciate being treated like an imbecile.

Conrad,

Don't take it personally. It just means that you're now one of us. If we really thought you were an imbecile, we'd just ignore you. ;-)

Welcome to the club.

Whoa….shitz, I think I got it! First of all, thanks to everybody for a very robust discussion on stereo recording. I wish to report that it was my way of perceiving stereo tracks that was the root cause of my problem! I’m thinking channels and your talking tracks? Ha ha ha…it was Conrad who tipped me off. I wouldn’t know what to do with a multiMono file! Maybe that’s what he means by interleaving? Anyways, I’m thinking tracks now and thinking 3 dimensional. I think this will solve my dilemma.

hello bwest,

I've always liked this site for microphone technique. Just wish I could afford their hardware!
